Meet Liverpool’s Key Men for Next Season [Part 1]
With the new season almost upon us, we thought we would look at who the key players are going to be for Liverpool during the next campaign. Here is part 1 of the series.
GK: Pepe Reina
Our undisputed number 1, although he has the Number 25 shirt. Calm in goal and his reflexes are absolutely lightning, a key member of our squad. A good leader at the back and a great distributor of the ball, setting us off on quick counter-attacks and his long goal kicks might be even more vital this season, with Carroll there to provide flick-ons and Luis Suarez to run on to them.
The best in the business and there’s a reason why Arsenal and Manchester United were chasing him, the Spaniard is aboslutely class in goal and has been vital to the Liverpool set-up, providing much needed consistency at the back.
RB: Glen Johnson
Made to play at leftback a lot last season, I still think that he is more suited to the rightback role. His surging runs provide Liverpool with an alternative route in attack and although he’s been a bit sluggish against Valerenga, I think we can forgive him for it being pre-season and because he has only recently recovered from injury.
Although his defending sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, I still think that his attacking flair outweighs his defensive imbalance, hence I think that he should start the season with the rightback berth come the Sunderland game. Although the fact is that he is going to need to work hard to keep Kelly and Flanagan out the team.
CB: Jamie Carragher
You guys knew this was coming. Our vice-captain has been our custodian at the back for years now and once again, he is consistent and he saves us on many occasions with a crunching last ditch tackle. One moment I particularly remember is when he was behind Torres and he managed to catch up with the Spaniard and come across to block his shot.
Might be getting on the wrong side of the 30, but I think he’s still got years left in him. Calm under pressure and a very versatile player at the back, having played at the rightback, centerback and leftback spot last season alone. A vital player when it comes to defending.
Look out for Part 2 of this series in the coming days….
