Stewart Downing: Just What Liverpool Have Been Missing?
Stewart Downing is already making a huge impression amongst Liverpool fans, there already seems to be that anticipation, waiting for some brilliance when he’s on the ball.
He’s already proving to be a nightmare to defenders in pre-season, one can only imagine the damage he’ll do to the likes of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Thomas Vermaelen come the new season.
His pace is perhaps one of the biggest factors for this. Another interesting prospect is to see how well he will blend with our Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez. Suarez favours playing to the left side of the attack and it would most certainly be intriguing to watch them link up for the first time come Sunderland or even Arsenal in the following gameday.
Downing missed out on our defeat to Galatasaray but managed to take part in the games against Valerenga and Valencia and he immediately showed Liverpool what the team really needed: width and quality crossing. Already I’ve talked about him being statistically the 2nd best crosser in the Premier League last year, but that’s not all he brings to the team. He gets behind the defence well and causes all sorts of problems up front.
Here’s a piece of live commentary I picked up from Goal.com whilst they were commenting on the Liverpool FC vs Valencia game:
Downing forces another corner through another brilliant left footed cross. Causing no end of problems down that left hand side for Los Che.

Now that’s just what Liverpool fans have been yearning to hear. Liverpool FC came out 2-0 winners against Valencia at Anfield.
