Arsenal Confirm Signing Of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain In £15m Deal

By on August 8, 2011

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton on a long-term contract with the youngster going straight into the first team squad.

The 17-year-old is thought to have joined Arsenal in a £15m deal, with the Gunners paying £12m up front with a further £3m in add-ons.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is a versatile attacker who can play in several positions up front and in midfield and is incredibly quick, drawing comparisons with fellow ex-Saints star Theo Walcott. Speaking to Arsenal.com, manager Arsene Wenger said:

“We are delighted that Alex has decided to join us.

“He is an exciting young player who will provide us with creativity and offensive quality. Alex is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions. He can play as an attacking centre midfielder, or wide left and right.

“Alex is a perceptive passer of the ball and has a great understanding of the game and looks to be a very good team player.”

Wenger continued: “Alex has done extremely well during his development with Southampton and we are looking forward to him progressing even further and fulfilling his huge potential with Arsenal Football Club.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain said:

“I’m so excited to be joining Arsenal. It’s a fantastic club and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of playing football at the highest level.

“Arsenal have a great manager in Arsène Wenger, top quality players and an attractive style of play. These were all important factors in me choosing to sign for Arsenal.

“I’m proud to be joining Arsenal, but I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Southampton for their help and support during the early part of my career, for which I will always be grateful.”

“I’m now looking forward to meeting all my new team mates and giving absolutely everything in an Arsenal shirt.”

15Million! does this mean Wenger is really ready to flash the Cheaque book and break bank? Maybe he should sign another Van Parsie…30Million. The Injuries must have inspired this latest move. Cahill will be a great add…let have our fingers crossed…

I am a Saints fan,and with no bitterness at all.I can honestly say he is fantastic when allowed to play his game.I also saw two very cynical experienced league 2 defenders for Notts County take him out of a game with consummate ease, and only one booking between them.Dont expect too much he will be way out of his league

Saints have got a good deal if Oxo has been sold for 12 million up front. i cant believe Cortese would have done business with only 5 million paid up front with the rest being paid “if he plays well”.Who would be the judge of that for gods sake!
No I think hes gone for 12 plus add ons and 30 per cent cut of future transfer fee.Nice!!!

I’m delighted with his signing and it’s important that we continue to build for the future and fill the homegrown player quota, but we need to get a defender very, very soon, 4 days to go… Click on my name!

i have supported arsenal for 20yrs and i will die an arsenal fan,but guys if you love your kid so much when that kid does wrongs you warn him, guide him and lastly if he fails punish him.wenger has been good,Alex is a promising player but not our solution,we all know our problem.now if some of us fans keep on praising wenger on buying kids then our beloved arsenal is drained for sure.am serious getting worried now after watching our match with Benifica fc its alarming.
