Cole Signs For Arsenal…..Oh No He Doesn’t!

joecole1

By Fab4.

The Joe Cole situation got slightly confusing this morning as reports are split on where he will be playing football next season. It was confirmed yesterday that Cole will be released by Chelsea when is contract expires at the end of the month. A couple of outlets claim to have ‘sources’ who say a deal has already been agreed with Arsenal and he will officially sign after the World Cup. While another has quotes from the Arsenal chairman claiming Cole’s name never came up in a recent meeting with chief executive Ivan Gazidis. It’s like a pantomime!

Cole signs 4-year-deal with Arsenal

Let’s start with the exciting news first. Arsenalinsider were first to break the ‘exclusive’ and claim to have reliable sources that say Joe Cole is set to sign a £115,000pw, four year deal when he returns from the World Cup. The report says that all that is left is for Cole to put pen-to-paper on the contract that will see him take home more than £4m a year in wages, and more than £2m in bonuses.

Cole signs 3-year-deal with Arsenal

Goal.com then publish an ‘exclusive’ of their own, this time claiming that Cole has already signed a contract that will see him join Arsenal on an £80,000pw, three-year deal. Although the deal is dependent on Cole being able to prove his fitness after the World Cup. The report claims to have inside information that suggests Cole was put through a basic medical last Monday, which was enough for Arsene Wenger to snap him up on a free transfer. But due to Cole’s injury record, Wenger insisted on having a clause in the contract that meant he must pass a more rigorous examination when he returns from South Africa before the deal can be officially completed.

Now given the fact that one ‘source’ claims Cole will sign a £115,00pw, four year deal and the other says its a £80,000pw, three year deal means there is a certain amount of doubt about the credibility of both stories. Arsenalinsider certainly have a good reputation and wouldn’t want to jeopardize it and they have revealed ‘exclusives’ in the past.  It’s conceivable that Goal.com saw Arsenalinsiders report and decided to spruce it up a bit with some talk about medicals and changed the figures slightly to make an exclusive of their own. The problem is you just don’t know who or what to believe these days.

Arsenal out of Cole race

To make things even more confusing, Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood is quoted in the Mirror as saying that manager Arsene Wenger “believes he already has enough midfielders of the same style,” and therefore does not need out-of-contract Cole and that his name was not even mentioned in a recent meeting with chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

“I had a long conversation with (chief executive) Ivan Gazidis, who had been with Arsene (Wenger) and his name never came up at all,”

This news has left Manchester United and Tottenham as favourites for Cole’s signature, although Liverpool and Manchester City remain in the hunt.

So if these quotes are reliable then it’s only fair to assume we should believe what we hear from the horses mouth and not some unknown ‘sources’, and that Arsenal are not close to signing Joe Cole. Of course the newspapers are just as likely to create some mythical quotes as websites are to make up ‘reliable sources’ so we’re back to square one. Not knowing what’s going on or who to believe. In the end it just comes down to what you want to believe. Because until something is officially announced, it’s all just speculation.

Who do you think Joe Cole will sign for?

I think there is something going on between Arsenal and J Cole. The fact that Wenger has come out and said that when ever he plays against us he always plays kind of confirms it for me. I could be wrong though.
We would be able to come close to the wages he wants, which i don’t believe Tottenham will.

You all know how these things work…..saying someone’s “name never came up in a meeting” is not the same as saying we aren’t interested….. especially if the parties know a deal is done…or the meeting wasn’t about playing staff!

The difference between the wages is the signing on fee. Just as when Sol Campbell joined, his wages were increased by 20-30k a week due to a clause in his contract….it was a bonus evey year he stayed.

I had my doubts, but wenger’s latest comments have cheered me up!

i would like to see joe cole at arsenal. i can’t see him coming in at arsenal and being the highest earner at the the club ahead of van the man and others on average wages so i don’t think he will be coming in at £115,000pw. i can’t see him wanting to uproot his family and move out of london and giving the to choices youd haved to say that anyone with half a brain would put pen to paper with arsenal over spurs.

Joel Senford you don’t need a brain to see that Spurs are very much on the up while the scum are heading the same way as the bin dippers -you’ll be lucky to finish top half this coming season

        June 10, 2010 at 11:13 am

Now-now children, lets not be silly. Tottenham are on the up, no question about that. The problem is that you were so far behind Arsenal that even at your current peak, your still miles behind the Gunners. I’m also confident Arsenal can finish in the top half, although Wolves are getting busy in the transfer market so you never know! (that was sarcasm for those of you who are a bit slow).

The only reason Cole would join Spurs over Arsenal is due to the English contingent at the Lane.

          June 10, 2010 at 12:20 pm

English contingent, Redknapp contingent, Friends contingent, atmosphere contingent, Future project contingent(training facilities and stadium) and money contingent, lets face it, the spuds have always had money, most profitable club outside the top four for several years running, they have always spent money as has Redknapp. They have a strikt pay structure but sign ons and bonuses are there. Beside i dont think we need him at the Arsenal, we have quality in that role and could spend that money improving other areas. Dont lament this player either way…….

    June 10, 2010 at 11:14 am

Oh yeah.. why would he ever sign for arsenal over tottenham? It’s not like Arsenal have finished above the spuds the last 13 years? I mean, of course he would pick tottenham! They finally managed to finish 4th!

#6 what planet are you on? Now I confess I’m not an arsenal supporter or even a yid. I’m proud to be Man Utd. However I just have to speak out. Modric is a good player, no doubt there and yes he is younger.. However stating he is a better player than Cole is foolish an could only have been dreamt up by baffoon. I would love to see Cole at Utd and hate to see him at Arsenal purely because of jeolousy. He is an amazingly talented player who can play across the park. Cole would make any team stronger and any one he left weaker!

it’s not the money it’s time on the pitch that seems to worry joe,He wants to be a main player. I’m sure at spurs harry would have him in the team every game as he rates him highly,as he can play differant positions not sure arsene would bring out the best in him as walcott has missed out on the world cup and mr wenger should take some responsibility for that. He has not played him as often as he should of ?the fans will know if thats true or not .but i don’t think joe will be a gooner.

Cole wants to play for an English club – how many Arse players in the England squad ?

This and that, how great Ar2ena1 are. lets all get excited about a player that has been let go by Chelsea and is clearly in-it for the money!..not to forget that he only plays half a season! To be fair i think he would be a good signing for Ar2ena1 they need some better tallent, as the only tallent they have at the moment will be with other clubs come the new season!

To be honest i hope he signs for you lot, we have a decent balance and who would we drop…Lennon, Modric, Bale… no thanks, espeailly with his wage demands. He is a ‘luxury’ player thank we can live without.

Typical tight Wenger though… potentailly 30m+ for Fab and you’ll get a replacement on a free haha

  14. DaveYid

    June 10, 2010 at 11:57 am

Joe Cole will make his decision based on playing time.
Arsenal would be ahead seeing as Spurs have Gareth Bale, Modric (if needed) and Kranjcar when he returns.

But IF Cole joins Arsenal, he’d have to face communication problems as Arsenal are the French B Team 😉

    June 10, 2010 at 12:05 pm

…. before you all start throwing toy out the pram, i know he wont be a direct replacement just an attempt at a cheap dig 😉

    June 10, 2010 at 12:23 pm

He will be mixing with all the Spurs players while he’s in Africa, getting to know his new team mates. As Le Scum do not have any representatives in the squad now that Walnut was kicked out for being……… well “shit” is the word I’m looking for, theres no chance of being roomies with one of your lot. Then theres the Harry factor and old team mate Defoe. If he does decide to join the Arse it will be for financial reasons alone.

    June 10, 2010 at 12:54 pm

I’m a Spurs supporter but I don’t see how we can sign him if what you read is correct (a big ‘if’ I know). He seems to be after a wage which is nearly double what our highest paid player gets now and the knock-on effect of that happening is enormous.

you spurs supporters talk utter trash. Arsenal through most of last season was competing for the league but due to half the first team being injured just fell short. Arsenal do have a very good team but lack strength in depth. If Wenger buys in the required quality then Arsenal will be in the top 4 again next season. Tottenham have a good team too but did better than was expected. Joe Cole is a half decent player but is too injury prone to improve either team.

Angelic please put a sock in it. Everyone is so sick of hearing the same boring excuses for the Arse not winning the title or anything for that matter. “oh we had so many injuries….half the team out!!!” boo hoo hoo. Its called football all teams suffer injuries its part of the game but only you lot moan about it incessantly. Give it up! The Arse fell short on all fronts because they are too young, too inexperienced and Wenger, though a great manager, hasn’t addressed these issues for ages now. Yes Arse are better than Spurs and have been for a while now….but you are still the worst most boring deluded supporters in England, if not Europe! COYS

    • Fab4

      June 10, 2010 at 2:01 pm

      @Fafa

Do you think the Spuds would have finished fourth if you were without Bale, Modric, Hudd, Defoe, Gomes, King, and Dawson for the last 5-6 games? No, of course you wouldn’t. Injurys at key times make or break a season. Simple. If Rooney had stayed fit United might well have won the league. Small things like that have massive impacts. So Arsenal have every right to point to our injury record as being an important factor in our failed attempt to win the league.

      • Matt - Yiddoo.

        June 10, 2010 at 8:38 pm

You guys really should know what you are talking about before speaking.

I think you will find that spurs had injuries accross all positions throughtout the season. All 4 of our strikers played for periods of the season.. Modric was out for months with a broken leg, Lennon was out for months, King had on off problems as always, Woodgate was out for most of the season, Corluka and Ekotto were out for long periods too.

Bale only got into the team because we had half our squad unavailable!

Arsenal are a very good team, but the season just passed has shown that there is little between any of the top 7 teams these days. Couple of bad results and you drop well behind.

Here’s hoping for another exciting year in the Premier League. COYS!

    Sssssh soooo quite!

  22. Angelic Beardy

    June 10, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Fafa is talking rubbish. Yes Arsenal do not have the experience in depth. But when Arshavin, Fabregas, and a unfit Van Persie are missing they where our main contribution in scoring goals. Also Gallas and TV was missing and they were our first choice defence any team would suffer. Hopefully Wenger will address these issues this summer.

  23. Topshell

    June 10, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Duh…as if only arsenal players were injured. I wonder where spurs would be if modric, krancjar, lennon, woodgate, corluka, assou-ekotto, defoe were not injured. modric missed about a quarter of the season, lennon practically 75% of the season, woodgate din play a game…etc etc..well ain’t arsenal fans just like their myopic manager, ‘I din see that”

    • Fab4

      June 10, 2010 at 4:21 pm

      @ Topshell

The difference is, Arsenal missed 5 WORLD CLASS players – Fabregas, Arshavin, RVP, Gallas, Vermaelen- (as well as several other good players – diaby, bendtner, song, clichy, almunia, ramsey) during the all important title run-in. That is why we fell short.

The Spuds missed a bunch of good players, and replaced them with equally good players so made very little difference to your team. You can’t really compare the Spurs injury ‘crisis’ to Arsenal, simply due to the fact of the quality of players we missed and the sheer number of players out.

    Love the comments – lol

50% arse and the other 50% shit

And from that I make no reference to the teams that you are all supporting.

What can be honestly said, regardless of anyones oppinion, is that Joe Cole is a player that AW, HR, SAF and any other premiership manager would like to have in thier team.

If he ends up at Arsenal he will be great
If he ends up at Spurs he will be great
If he ends up at Utd he will be great
If he ends up at City…………………Well he might be great (Only as they wont be CL)

Whats best for JC is as said above “Playing Time”, and the reason his demands have fallen on deaf ears at Chelsea are because A: He wasnt appreciated, B: He wasnt appreciated, C: He wasnt appreciated.

Give JC the option of A: Take a LARGE pay cut, and stay at CFC playing a mediocre role in a team probably in the process of a minor re-structure or B: Find a new club and restart your career on a new playing field and there is only ever going to be 1 option.

Do you think Frank Lampard or JT would be treated in such a way? JT Held CFC to ransom over the demands of his wages and was rewarded for it. JC has quetly gone about his bussiness and will leave chelsea fans with nothing but good memories and no sore feelings.

Notice how few CFC fans are on here commenting about how JC is a prick et all.

Id love to see JC at Utd, but id understand his reasons for joining any of the above (Except maybe City – Only because they are not in the CL).

To be honest I think Arsenal have more need for Cole than Spurs do. Not just on the playing side of things but also to address the embarrassing fact that they are the only ‘top’ club to not supply a single England player.

On the playing front – with Fabregas probably off to Barcelona there will be a space in their midfield for another creative player – especially with the jury still being out on Arshavin and Nasri (who only seem to turn it on periodically) as well as Walcott being…. well… basically just not a very good player. It will probably also appeal to Cole that with Fabregas off it may mean him getting starts in the central position that he prefers playing in.

The Spurs midfield at the end of last season had Bale, Modric and Lennon in the attacking positions and Cole wouldn’t displace any of those. If Bale moves to left back then that would leave an opening on the left side of the midfield for Cole to fight out with Krankjaer, but I think that overall Cole would be more of a squad player at Spurs than he would at Arsenal. The fact that Spurs play with two up front compared to Arsenal’s one up also means more midfield positions to fill at Arsenal.

Wouldn’t suprise me if Cole ended up at Man Utd anyway.

I just had a thought when these were mentioned…

    diaby, bendtner, song, almunia, ramsey

Would any of these get anywhere near a spurs team last season?

    • Fab4

      June 10, 2010 at 9:13 pm

      Em,
Bendtner = not much between him and Crouch/Pav so yeah he would. All are decent if not spectacular.
Ramsey = you lot would love to have Ramsey, one of the best young talents around, so yeah he would. But like at Arsenal, only when others are injured.
Diaby = hit/miss but on his day can look world class and looks like he’s gonna start for France in the World Cup, would have a chance.
Almunia = fair play, he’s not good enough.
Song = much improved and think he’s at least on par with Hudd, also think Palacios is very over-rated by the scum.

Obviously it all depends on formations, management, who playing partners would be, etc. For example, Song can’t play in a 4-4-2 formation like you lot play.

  28. Matt - Yiddoo.

    June 10, 2010 at 8:43 pm

Really dont think they would have…

  29. Luke

    June 10, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Bendtner probably the worst striker in a top half side.
Ramsey will be good, isnt yet.
Diaby just a lanky spot filler.
    Almunia is shocking.
Song improved but still not better then hud, hud can actually pass.
Palacios over rated? Thats why barca are sniffing when yaya goes.

Arsenal fans no nothing of football, just the beautiful game.
You dont see the game how it is played. You see it how you want to see it played.

    • Fab4

      June 11, 2010 at 12:06 am

See this is the problem with spuds, you can’t have a sensible conversation with you. You are only capable of saying all arsenal players are shit and tottenham players are great.

Ramsey isn’t any good, do me a favour. Hudd can pass yes, but he’s got the turning circle of a ferry and jan molby makes him look like usain bolt!

Palacios is wanted by Barca (apparently), so cos of that it makes him a great player? Well in that case, the worst striker in a top half side in ur opinion (bendtner) was also linked with AC Milan and Juve in recent times. Is he also a great player now because of the clubs he’s linked to in the press?!

Tottenham are aspiring to be everything arsenal are and have achieved, deal with it.

LOL a lot of angry Spuds in here. I guess the inferiority complex of ALWAYS being 2nd best to your bigger, more sucessful, more attractive neighbour breeds this sort of contempt and vitriol. Why do all spud fans seem to have a fanciful view of reality? They seem to be in denial, or some alternate reality where everything is the other way round.

    Stay classy Spuds.
