Spanish Giants Plan £110m Swoop For England Pair
By Football Talk.
Real Madrid are set to launch a sensational £110m double bid for Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, according to the Daily Star. The Spanish giants are preparing another summer of outrageous spending and have now set their sights on capturing two of England’s finest.
The report claims Madrid president Florentino Perez is ‘obsessed’ with signing Rooney and is willing to match the world record fee of £80m he splashed out to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. This is not the first time Real have been linked with a move for Rooney and they feel a substantial offer would be too good for United to turn down given the level of debt the club is in.
Apparently new manager Jose Mourinho met with director general Jorge Valdano yesterday and agreed upon a transfer strategy, where Mourinho made it clear his No.1 target was Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard. The 30-year-old has been unsettled following a disappointing season at Anfield and has refused to discuss his future until after the World Cup. Madrid will table an offer in the region of £30m for Gerrard as soon as England exit the tournament.
The Daily Star has quotes from a club source that claim:
“There will be a couple of signings in the next two weeks but the big names will arrive after the World Cup.
“This is not madness. Rooney would be perfect for Real Madrid because of his hunger and desire.
“It is not impossible to sign him. People said that initially about David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, but they both made the move.
“In football nothing is impossible for Florentino Perez.”
