[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-0 Man City: Superb Gunners Deserved Their Win

Arsenal produced a superb display to regain third position in the league and all but end Manchester City’s title hopes. Here are player ratings from the game.

Mikel Arteta Arsenal

Arteta - Deserved winner

Arsenal produced a superb display to regain third position in the league and all but end Manchester City’s hopes of winning the Premiership title this season.

Arsenal were by far the better side in the first half and were unfortunate not to go ahead when Robin van Persie headed towards goal from close range only for the ball to hit Vermaelen on the shoulder right on the line and deflect on to the bar.

Van Persie went close again in the second half when his header struck the post as the pressure from the home side increased. The Gunners went even closer to opening the scoring when first Walcott hit the post only for Vermaelen to slice the rebound wide from 2 yards out, the ball fell to the feet of Benayoun practically on the line but somehow a City defender managed to clear.

But the deadlock was eventually broken in the 88th minute when Arteta stole possession in midfield to fire home from 25 yards to win it for Arsenal. (you can watch the goal as well as match highlights here)

The result means City are now eight points behind United with only six games remaining, while Arsenal are now two points clear of fourth-placed Tottenham.

Arsenal were worthy winners and dominated City for the majority of the match. in fact, they restricted City to just 5 attempts at goal (0 on target), a season low for the Citizens. Arsene Wenger’s men deserve a huge amount of credit for the way they have turned their season around in recent weeks. Here are my player ratings:

Szczesny 7, Sagna 7.5, Koscielny 8, Vermaelen 8, Gibbs 7 (Santos 7), Song 9, Arteta 9, Rosicky 8.5, Walcott 7 (AOC 6), Benayoun 7 (Ramsey 5) , Van Persie 7.

Man City Player Ratings:

Balotelli got a 3? To use a Jose Mourinho quote “Mario did his best to get a zero for his performance today.”

Excellent result. Arteta you`ve earned your stripes in the Spanish side, but oh! Ramsey I`m afraid you just don`t have it.

Ramsey is crap i have to admit, he cant shoot or even use a simple pass to two open players, cant even dribble past a defender. YB is miles ahead and combined well with TR.

        April 9, 2012 at 9:16 am

That was a truly telling moment, and you actualy saw what several teammates think of him…mainly AOC and RVP at getting the hot urine treatment on what should have been one of the easiest assists of his career. Don’t think he’s ever really understood how to play non-hoofing football. His brain can’t really register the action at it’s current pace. He is thoroughly sh*t!

What stat did u use in assigning those ratings? If its being effective, sure, walcot got a 7 but if its total overall contribution, i’ll score walcot 2.5. The poorest player on d pitch today after of course, twatloteli.

    • The Don

      April 8, 2012 at 10:46 pm

if walcot was poorest on the pitch

      how come we won,?
and dominated city from start to finishe

      every arsenal player played well.

sometime theo dose not need to get a goal or assist to have a good game.

him and sagna was destroying city.

and walcot was unlucky not to score aswel.

        April 9, 2012 at 4:01 am

Walcott was by far the poorest player on the pitch.. I think balotelli contributed more to his team than walcott did to Arsenal.. let’s not be disguised by the score and the overall performance of the team. Walcott never went behind clichy not a single time. His first touches were always poor.. He has not created a single chance.. and also gave away the ball so many times.

I thought Arsene was a bit late in subbing him. He should have been subbed before gibbs was subbed.

        • Manamongst

          April 9, 2012 at 9:13 am

Agree, at least Balo contributed the ONE shot (cleared by defender) in the game. He actually looked to be trying on balls in the air, Aguero, Walcott and Ramsey thoroughly looked sh*tty. Ramsey MUST have naked pics of Wenger to keep getting continued run-outs, and lucky to be subbed on the same time Nasri was taken off. So you couldn’t really tell if they were booing Wengers continued infatuation with Ramsey on the wing or the hatred of Samir Nasri. But Walcott didn’t seem interested in taking on Clichy at all, not to mention the pure absurdness that Mancini could field Zabaletta on the RB side without any worries. Not really sure WHY Wenger continues to keep AOC on the shelf.

Hope it makes the young man all the more hungrier…

            April 9, 2012 at 10:24 am

The reason why he keeps AOC on the bench is because twats like you would be booing him after 1 bad game…Ramsey will be a quality player for us, which is why Ferguson wanted him

Walcott was not good today, but not a 2.5 I would give him a 5, He is too lightwieght and gets knocked off the ball and seems frightened to take anyone on as he knows he won’t get past them. When you see the Ox play, he knows he’s gonna beat them and drives at them. I would also boost Sanga up as he played really well and was solid and reliable as normal. I even think his crossing has improved ….

    • Blazer

      April 9, 2012 at 8:59 pm

I agree with you on that, Theo was dreadeful and Wenger was cought once again sitting on his hand when his player was performing badly, I should say not performing. Thoe failed to make one good pass or pass one defender. This is the area where Wenger lack the ability to make decision, he waites until late in the game 75+ minutes to correct deficiencies, Theo should be pulled out before half time. Another player to get rid off is the golly before he cost the team crucial points, the guy is not smart enough to play in the premier league.

Don’t forget that City didn’t have Silva and Yaya on the pitch. Well, we deserve the victory today we dominated the game and it looked like City don’t have a coach. Arteta is my MOM and for Ramsey, I will pardon him and give him more time to prove himself i.e. One or two seasons.

    • The Don

      April 8, 2012 at 10:53 pm

ermm they did have yaya on the pitch..well he started the game.

silva was dropped his been poor for city he was rested.

and dont forget we didnt have wilshare.

also city should of been playing with 10 men from the first half.

city should be lucky they lost 1-0
could of been worse for them

every player for arsenal was on top form today.

We would score another goal if Ramsey decided to assist to RVP .I Hope he ‘ll improve if he want to be in more first team opportunity next season, cos the returning of jack and the possible of new signing.

Anyone trying to say we won because ramsey did not start,Go get a punching bag and take out your frustration on it or just f**k off.Vermaelen and Benayoun missed even easier chances than ramsey and you still lay into him and leave them out?Go support the team and keep your childish obsession of finding a scapegoat to yourself.Chamberlain didnt start as well,is he a bad player?Gervinho?we are having a better season than last and wilshere hasnt played a single game,is he bad too?Stop watching the game with a predetermined mindset, its bad enough the pundits and commentators rubbish our team now we have to include our own supporters as well?with fans like that we might as well play our home games at WHL,wouldnt be different.

I like your comment Thiago, always fickle fans complaining whether we Win or loose, just mourning consistently .CONGRATZ TO THE LADS ,FANTASTIC RESULT ,GREAT COMMITMENT LEVELS FROM ALL PLAYERS & BIG UPS TO RAMSEY FOR BEING BRAVE TO TAKE THE CHANCE & NOT PASS RVP ,sometimes we’ve missed lots of chances cause players take the scoring responsibility and place it on RVP.

Don’t think people are actually saying that, but clearly Ramsey doesn’t belong out there. Can you tell me what position he actually can play??? Exactly…crickets…

He can’t play CM, the second he touches the ball defenders will pounce on him (did you see what happened when Barry or Milner got the ball against Song? Yes, this. Wing? I think not he just runs inside and pisses off teammates squeezing out precious space. Attacking Mid? Please! He can’t take on my grandmother, and would simply be passing backwards the entire game, we’ve tried that and it only puts pressure on Arteta, guaranteed if you ask Mikel he would say, please god don’t let me tandem with that idiot…

Your comments are totally out of order !! Ramsey is an excellent footballer who will prove himself next season. Stop pickingg out scapegoats and support the entire team You sound like one of those muppets who were criticising AW earlier in the season Are you ?

Great and ballanced comment, I couldn’t agree more. Ramsey should not come out there and imbarace himself, the guy has a long way to go to compete at this level. I admire his energy and stamena but he does not have the skill and to be fair to Ramsey, this is not his fault, as long as he gives what he has you can’t fault him. The problem is with Wenger, he disrupts the team’s momentum time and time again by bringing in flups from the bench, costing the team games. How could he bring in Ramsey to play left wing ahead of Gervinho or AOX is beyond belief, pluging in one unfit player in the team disrupt the team chemistry and Wenger is becoming an expert in doing just that.

    • bennie

      April 9, 2012 at 9:31 am

Its u who has got a problem. We won bcoz he didnt start…simple! Yo argument for Ramsey doesn’t make up anything sensible in a footballing sense. Why do you think Wenger went in for Benayoun than him??

The best chance he has at Arsenal next season is go out on loan. Possibly at Bolton if they survive. With Wilshire coming, Podoski on the way and Diaby likely to be fit…I see no room for his present ability.

Its clear for every1 to see…the OX’s abilities assures him a place in the team at present…whether as a substitute or starter.

Ramsey even when he was given an open opportunity today, he did what does best recently…he squandered it.

Vermaelen and Benayoun did take the best option that was a head of them and the goal didn’t go in. But Ramsey had two super options than being greedy. RVP and the OX were there and he saw them.

In the present Arsenal line-up I am replacing two players one of which does not even make bench standard and should go out on loan for the first half of next season.Unfortunately both are Wenger`s protege`s which presents a bit of a problem. The two in question Ramsey and Walcott. Podolski and Ox-Chamberlain will be a breath of fresh air.

Ramsey must go Jack, and I would sell Theo. Part of the brilliance of being a great team that always wins…and not just on the pitch is, in the words of Kenny Rogers, “knowing when to hold them and no when to fold” We wouldn’t be dealing with Diaby hoovering our wages for f*ckall…

Ok seriously there’s nothing wrong with pointing out what a player did wrong. Ramsey is the poorest finisher in arsenal in my opinion. It’s not the attemp but how you make the attemp. Check all Ramsey’s attempts on youtube, you’l laugh your head off. How do you kick the ball that wide from the distance!!!

  23. Andre

    April 9, 2012 at 12:09 pm

If arsenal finish 7 or less points behind City (which is very doable as we are 10 points behind now and they still have to face Man U) we have Arguably had a better season then the Money Bags haha.

This season we have been Destroyed with injuries with all 4 fullbacks out at the same time for 3-4 months. Mertasacker out for half the season. wilshire out the whole season and ramsey out for 2-3 months, and diaby pretty much the whole season.

We have gone further in the CL then Man C and are coming so close to them in the PL.

ALL YOU FICKLE FANS WHO WERE CHANTING FOR WENGER OUT NEED TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE. it is a miracle we are where we are this season with the team we have had to put out this season.

We will build in the summer, THANK GOD we are not splashing out on Gotze and hopefully not Hazzard. BUT BUILD ON THE TEAM!! good CB neededso we have 4 back up GK and back up ST

I think we all should be honest, Ramsey at the moment aint sh*t but average, equal to Barton. But I think we should give him 2 seasons because I think he will come good. Song has improved a lot in two seasons and Arsenal fans were on his back 2 or 3 seasons ago, and now I think Song is amazing.

Also just to add, not making Ramsey a scapegoat, but he aint currently good as Rosicky, so if Ramsey started instead on Rosicky 1-0 could of easily been 0-0 or 0-1. The same goes with playing Ramsey through the middle ahead of Rosicky. The same with the QPR game, instead of 2-1 it could of been 1-1 or 1-2

  26. John

    April 9, 2012 at 4:09 pm

CRITICIZING is OK but NO CURSING please.. In my opinion,Ramsey is not good enough too and need to be loaned out for a full season..let’s see how he cope with that.. BUT to be completely Honest,it’s hard to agree with the people who say that he’s good and will be a big player for us.. As at times,I don’t think that’s objective and realistic enough.. i can’t see that.. ALSO,i believe that the MAIN PROBLEM for the fans is that Wenger keeps on playing Ramsey despite there’re obviously other better players on the bench. It’s a shame that Rosicky must wait till 2012 to get a run of matches.. and now,i can see that Ox,gerv, and Yossi being frustrated by Wenger favour on Ramsey.
