Vertonghen Begs For Tottenham Move Despite Arsenal & Man Utd Interest

Ajax’s Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed he is desperate to join Tottenham this summer despite interest from rivals Arsenal and Manchester United

Target - Vertonghen

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed he is desperate to join Tottenham this summer, despite interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Belgian stopper will enter the final year of his contract this summer and has made it clear he wont be signing an extension, paving the way for a summer move away from the newly-crowned Dutch champions.

The Mirror reported on Monday that Manchester United had made a last ditch move to try and snare the Ajax captain from under the noses of Arsenal, who were believed to be edging ahead of Tottenham to his signature.

However, the player has been quoted today by as saying his preferred destination is in fact Spurs and the 25-year-old is eager for the two clubs to agree a deal as quickly as possible.

Vertonghen described Tottenham as his “favourite” club and claims that Ajax’s valuation of him is holding up the deal. He also praised the tradition of the North Londoners and suggested it was the clubs transfer policy of buying young offensive minded players that appeals to him. Here is what Vertonghen is quoted as saying by

“Tottenham are absolutely my favourite.[But] the Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in year.

“I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.”

“I owe much to Ajax, but I’ve always given my whole heart and soul to the club,” Vertonghen continued.

“My appreciation for the club and the fans is great. It would be terrible if my farewell is marred or distorted because Ajax [are stubborn] with the asking price.

“Of course I want Ajax to gain financially, but the amount that Tottenham want to pay, I think – perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable.

“Next year I can leave for free. I hope that this awareness is there, because a transfer lingering for weeks like Maarten Stekelenburg’s [to Roma] seems very harsh.

“He joined at the end of Roma’s preparation [for the new season]. I want to be able to blend in with the other players at Spurs from the start [of pre-season training].”

“Tottenham is a fantastic football club that has the tradition I want,” he explained.

“Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs is already very close nearby. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players.”

First he stated he wanted to play for Arsenal, then now switching to Spur, really fascinated at how quickly a mind can change, where next? Barca? R-Madrid? or perhaps B-Munich?

Come on guys. We all know it is the silly season where speculative sensationalist journalism is in overdrive. None of us really know what is the truth with this player only those doing deals behind the scenes. As a gooner I liked the sound of him and would have him at Arsenal, but I only want players that really want to be at Arsenal. If he is desperate for Spurs we should drop our interest move on to other targets. I will not feel bitter about this. I would feel far more unhappy if we bought a player that was desperate for Spurs all along.

i think this summer gonna be very interesting, and every team gonna buy good player, according to premier league standards,i am a man utd fan and still hope that they buy sum useful players,or other wise city will crush them like that they did this season, and now for this player,i think he should join spurs for that,he’ll match the attacking stratergy

This boy is funny. He changes gear like a car. I suppose he feels Spurs will get a Champion league spot that is why he is interested. Secondly, he knows his playing time in Arsenal will be less than in Spurs. Let Spurs fail to get the Champion league spot, you will see another interest. To me, he is not the ruthless or tough defender we need to add to the Arsenal defense. After all, Ajax defense which he is a key player is not that tough. We already have his type even in the young players. Arsenal should go for a very traditional tough defender like Ferdinand of Man U who knows he is a defender and not an attacker,

I do not agree with you on the statement he ain’t a tough defender..believe me he is..last season ajax had lot’s of players injured and yest they have won that last 14! matches..This man is a real good defender and he can score. He can become much better..

Whilst I would like to see him at Arsenal, can anyone really blame him if he wants to go down market and ensure that he gets games. Why battle for a place when there is an option of joining a weaker team and being gauranteed 1st team football? Some players just like to take the easy route, rather than improve that improve themselves. Pity if he is one of those, but if he does choose to go down a step from Ajax then the scum is an ideal place.

this is bs i doubt he ever said that.Last heard was that he knew of tottenhams interest but there are other clubs. Which implies that even though spurs are interested he would rather look at the other clubs. This is absolute rubbish and can be found nowhere else on any blog or website.

He does not beg and with all respect for tottenham, if you can choose between 3 clubs Man U, Arsenal and Tottenham…..

He is not suppose to make any statements now, he should be quiet good players don’t make noise. So as to avoid fans settle well with him. In England if you as a player insult arsenal and man united football club and still sign for another club in England maybe you will find it difficult to adopt.

Why is it that many clubs like competing arsenal for most of the players they want, these clubs must know that wenger usually go for talent and turn them into veterans, chelsea went for lukaku but failed to perform, and spurs are known for aproaching players droped by other clubs. Eg gallas, parker, adebayor, friedel and more.
