Defender Set For Move After Agent Confirms Talks Are Underway
Arsenal defender Johan Djourou looks likely to leave the club this summer, according to the players agent, with a move to Italy the most likely destination.
Arsenal defender Johan Djourou looks likely to leave the club this summer, according to the players agent.
The 25-year-old endured a difficult season for the Gunners last term, starting just 14 games, with many of those out of position in the unfamiliar right back role.
The Switzerland international is now seen as fourth choice centre back with Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker all ahead of him in the pecking order, which has left him considering his future at the Emirates despite extending his contract to 2015 in February.
A move to Spain or Italy is likely according to Djourou’s agent, Flavio Ferraria, who is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying he will be in Italy next week to meet with potential suitors amid speculation linking him with a move to Napoli.
“Can Djourou join Napoli? It’s certainly possible, especially as we will be in Italy next week for a series of appointments,”
“At the moment Napoli are not on the list of appointments, but everything is possible. If he leaves the Premier League, then he will play in Italy or Spain.
“I saw my client the other day and he was enthusiastic about both Napoli and Italy in general. So far we have received an offer worth €10m, but it is up for negotiation.
“He wants to play for one of the top five Italian clubs.”
Ferraria is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News
FT Verdict
I was a huge fan of Johan’s when he was youngster and could really see him going on to become a first team regular at Arsenal. However, his confidence has taken a knock in the past 18 months and perhaps a move away from the club is best for both parties.

He isn’t going to get in ahead of Vermaelen, Koscielny or Per and while i still think he’s a decent fourth choice defender, he’s at an age where he needs to be playing week-in week-out and Serie A would be a good move for him.
