Flamini Back To Arsenal?

AC Milan have confirmed that Frenchman Mathieu Flamini has left the club and is now available on a free transfer. Should Arsene Wenger now make a move for him?

Mathieu Flamini

Flamini - would you have him back?

For those who haven’t heard, former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini is a free agent having been released by AC Milan.

Flamini was out-of-contract this summer and despite several rounds of talks with Milan over a new deal, vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed on Sky Sports News that the club have now ended contract negotiations and the Frenchman has left the Serie A giants.

Speaking about Flamini’s situation, Galliani said:

“The deadline has passed and we told his lawyer we won’t be waiting any more. We’ll bring in a new midfielder by August 31,”

“It could be Alberto Aquilani or someone else, as he is a Liverpool player and we’re not in talks with them.”

Galliani was quoted as saying on Sky Sports News

Flamini moved to AC Milan in 2008 on a free transfer having failed to agree a new contract with Arsenal. He made 37 appearances in his first year at the San Siro but never really managed to hold down a regular first team place and was largely being used as a utility player or played out-of-position at right back.

He managed to rack up a further 61 appearances over the next two seasons but it was becoming clear that he wasn’t in the clubs long-term plans. Last season was a disaster for the Frenchman as he made just 2 appearances all year, mainly due to a serious knee injury picked up at the start of the season.

With Arsene Wenger being linked with moves for defensive midfielders like Yann Mi’Vila and Nigel De Jong this summer, could the frugal French boss turn to Flamini as a far cheaper alternative?

Flamini struck up an excellent partnership with former captain Cesc Fabregas in the middle of the park in the 2007/08 season and was sorely missed when he left.

Despite the serous knee injury suffered last term, the Frenchman will not be short of options this summer and at 28, he should be coming to the prime years of his career. So he could be an excellent buy for the Gunners this summer.

Would he be welcome back at the Emirates? I think so. Many fans were disappointed by the manner in which he left, but he didn’t leave under a dark cloud like Cole, Nasri or Adebayor did.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d prefer Arsene to sign his number one target Yann M’Vila, but if that deal falls through he could do a lot worse than to bring Flamini in on a two-year deal.

He could provide competition to Alex Song for the defensive midfield position and wouldn’t stifle the long-term development of young prospects like Francis Coquelin or Emmanuel Frimpong. He knows what playing for Arsenal is all about and he already has  experience of playing in the Premier League. Plus, he’s available on a free transfer!

No! No! and a big NO! We don’t need him. just coming from a long term injury means that he may not be able to play consistently next season. A gain it seems his footballing career is done. Let him open a barber shop if he did not save enough to earn a living.
    Gunner 4 ever.

i think he would be a bargain, he is a free transfer and also at his prime. there in no one dat tackles hard like him, he has premier ship experience and will not time to settle down.unlike m’villa who will cost us about 17million pounds. m’villa will also need time to settle.

he’s a great player. wenger should buy him. he’s the better central miedfielder arsenal had in the last 5 years. mvila is not that brilliant as everybody says.

I’d rather bring Hleb back. At least, he openly regrets what a mistake he did by moving to Barcelona. Flamini is an opportunist whose days are gone. had he continued with arsenal in that fine form that he was in, the club could have held things together. Now he can’t make even AC Milan’s bench leave alone cut into France’s team. Maybe now he can use all that money.

  17. Arsene Wenger

    June 21, 2012 at 4:53 pm

He’s too expensive. I need a volunteer in that position!

  18. Mathieus

    June 21, 2012 at 4:56 pm

I think we should get him on a free BUT only for the bench. And:

    M’Vila, Vertonghen, Ben Arfa

Then we’ll have a serious looking team!

  19. Solando

    June 21, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Yep…agree with Mathieus. Flamini will be good back up and he can also play right back, which we need good cover for.

With these signings we’ll have a good mix of muscle, flair, experience and youth – get in!!!

Let flamini cum back 2 arsenal so dat d like of RVP and odas can learn a gud leson frm him bt wenger should sign m’villar

    June 22, 2012 at 5:17 am

it was a total humiliation losing him at that prime time and more so as a free agent when he was at his best, any its a lesson and we all know that what goes a round comes a round. surely he’s a fighter and deserves to be back because we need him.

    June 22, 2012 at 6:46 am

Wenger is slow at buying players, and if Flamini is coming for afree transfer, let us take him that’s what we can count! He’s the Arsenal’s prodigal son!

i was disappointed with Flamini too when he left for Milan but to have him back would provide cover at DCM and RB. I would always put Coquelin in front of him but Le Coq injury record wasnt that great last year so having Flamini would provide exp cover.

But regardless i see him returning to France’s league one

There is noting bad in bringing him back if he still knows the game. He was very good when he was with the gunners so if he still knows his onions he can come back.

Really !! , yes flamini left for money and a big club like milan .Flamini was excellent player for arsenal. cant beleive all the negative comments. He ran and ran and ran , covered the ground , neat passer , got in peoples faces . All round midfielder that most teams should have at least one of . He left for money , this is football people . All players leave for money , sometmes the press dont make a big point of it but nearly all transfers have money and greed involved . Flamini , cracking player , id rather mvilla perhaps but flamini does a bit of everything . Gooners forget fast these days .
