Marseille have rejected a £6m bid from European champions Chelsea for defender Cesar Azpilicueta, with the French side holding out for £10m for the Spaniard.
With the summer transfer window in full swing, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news throughout the summer. Today, Chelsea have failed with a bid for Cesar Azpilicueta.
Marseille have rejected a £6m bid from Chelsea for defender Cesar Azpilicueta, according to the Metro.
Blues manager Roberto Di Matteo is desperate to add a right back to his squad ahead of the new season after seeing Jose Bosingwa leave the club, while there are still doubts over Paulo Ferreira’s future at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian boss has so far failed with moves for Inter Milan’s Maicon, Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel, Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy and Borussia Dortmund star Lukasz Piszczek this summer, which has seen him turn his attention to Azpilicueta.
The Metro claim that Chelsea have entered talks with Marseille for the Spanish right back but have had a £6m offer rejected, with the Ligue 1 side holding out for £10m.
The European champions are believed to be unwilling to match that offer, but a compromise could be reached with all three parties keen for a deal to be struck.
Chelsea have watched the 23-year-old in action during Spain’s failed Olympic Games campaign, and while the player has admitted he’s flattered by Chelsea’s interest, he revealed there are other clubs in the running.
‘It is flattering when you have clubs such as Chelsea interested in you, but there are other clubs interested as well,’
Azpilicueta is quoted as saying by the Metro.
