Luis Suarez: Liverpool Couldn’t Have Asked For A Better ‘New’ Torres
When you talk about someone who has justified his price tag, Luis Suarez is certainly up there. He broke the Liverpool transfer record (for a few hours) and he has endeared himself into the hearts of Liverpool fans.
The sometimes controversial Uruguayan forward perhaps is most renown for his role in Uruguay’s march to the semi finals in the World Cup last year. From the hero to the villain and then to the hero again, with him bagging a number of goals to send them to the quarter finals, where he ultimately made the ‘save of the season’ which ultimately proved decisive, as Gyan missed his spotkick and then Uruguay managed to finish the Ghanaians in the penalty shootouts.
But well, he seems to have shed away that habit of his to lose his temper, and as he did once in Holland, bite opponents in the year, none of that nonsense since his move to Anfield and he has certainly made Liverpool fans sing a popular phrase when Suarez scores a goal, ‘Fernando Who?’. It’s a tough task replacing the Spaniard (or so was thought), that was 50 million pounds worth of goals to live up to (at that point), the team was built around him and he was the focal point in attack.
Another worry at the beginning was whether he could manage to cope with the English game quickly. Remember Ryan Babel? Another player whom was snapped up from Ajax by Liverpool FC? Never really lived up to his potential with Liverpool, although it can be argued that he created several magical moments of his own. In the January transfer window he was sold to Hoffenheim, and Suarez certainly had a lot to prove to himself.
Matchday 1 for Suarez: Stoke City, All is Rosy at Anfield
One of the most memorable matches of the season for Liverpool fans, although it can be argued that there weren’t many other great performances before this match. It was what all the Scousers went to Anfield to see: Luis Suarez perform, and perform he did, giving Liverpool fans more than enough reason to cheer after his first goal went in to the net in the red kit of Liverpool. It can be argued though that it was indeed lucky, that it really should have been cleared by the defender.
It took Suarez 16 minutes to stamp an impression with Liverpool fans, and a really good one. Rounding off the goalkeeper, along with his pace, creativity and skill with the ball, with him certainly looking like a Barcelona player if you ask me with all his flicks, with all his turning, with all his skill.
Impossible Angles vs Sunderland
Creating a chance out of nothing is what this diminutive little forward does best. An amazing work ethic, an eye for a pass, and a quality shot. His stunner against Sunderland suggested that this striker was more than special, and that Liverpool actually had a bargain.
Running onto a throw-in, he turned into the box, and fired straight at goal aiming at the far-post. And the far post he hit, a remarkable hit it was, a wonderful buy Liverpool had. It almost reminded me of a goal that Fernando Torres scored against Sunderland themselves just a year back, where he cut in and fired in from far-out.
Securing an Immortal Status: vs Manchester United
Big matches are where legends are made, and Suarez couldn’t possibly have picked a better team to turn up against to show his true class. Instrumental in two goals, especially the first one, and he took all the Liverpool fans’ breaths away for a few seconds. What a turn, and it really should have been his goal.
He skips past one, two, three… No he didn’t! Luis Suarez did not just do that! FERNANDO WHO?
What a commentator said when Luis Suarez produced that moment of magic.
That is one of those goals that will be remembered by Liverpool fans for years to come, even though the goal is still credited to some credit stealing on behalf of our very own Dirk Kuyt. Magical, magical, magical, that’s all you can say about a goal of that quality. It was class.
A Set Piece Maestro Too! : vs Wigan Athletic
A few months back, Luis Suarez unleashed a menace of a free-kick. Forgot exactly who was in between the sticks that day, but it was in fact against Wigan. He set up a free kick in the game which finished 1-1. And he absolutely smashed it. It was remarkable technique, power and accuracy, slamming the ball straight onto the bar.
A Solo Performance: Fulham
When Liverpool FC wreaked havoc on Fulham a month or two ago, Luis Suarez had an absolute stunner of a game. So many runs, a goal, many passes and it was almost faultless in the game where he earned the man-of-the-match performance.
