Chelsea vs Liverpool Preview, Team News, Likely Line-ups & Predicted Score
Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Here is a preview with team news, likely line-ups and predicted score for the big game.
Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Sunday as the two sides get back to Premier League action after their midweek European adventures.
The game will see Chelsea’s £50m striker Fernando Torres come up against his former side once again with the Spaniard still looking for his first win against his ex-employers. Torres has lost all three Premier League games and a League Cup encounter following his move from Anfield in January 2011, and didn’t play when Chelsea come out 2-1 victors in the FA Cup final last season.
Chelsea will hope to regain top spot in the table after seeing Manchester United leap-frog them last weekend following the Blues 1-1 draw with Swansea, and Roberto Di Matteo’s men head into the game after a morale-boosting 3-2 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.
Liverpool on the other hand come off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League on Thursday and boss Brendan Rodgers has endured a difficult start to life at Anfield after winning just two league games so far.
Team News
Ashley Cole misses out once again for the home side after failing to recover from the hamstring injury that kept him out of the midweek tie with Shakhtar, Roberto Di Matteo hopes to have him back for next week’s trip to West Bromwich Albion.
Captain John Terry is expected to come back into the side after completing a four-match domestic ban, although he was surprisingly left out in midweek. Di Matteo has hinted he may rest David Luiz so Terry may partner Gary Cahill at the back. Frank Lampard remains out.
Brendan Rodgers rested Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Joe Allen, Nuri Sahin, Daniel Agger, Jose Reina, Glen Johnson, Raheem Sterling and Jose Enrique for their midweek Europa League clash with Anzhi and all the key men are set to be recalled on Sunday.
However, first choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina is still struggling to shake off a hamstring injury that’s kept him on the sidelines for the last six matches. There is better news on Glen Johnson though after the right back was passed fit for the game.
Likely Line-ups
Predicted Score
Liverpool seem to have become something of a bogey team for Chelsea in recent seasons and despite their patchy form this season, nobody would be surprised if Brendan Rodgers’ men reserved their best performance of the season for this Sunday. We’re going for an entertaining draw. Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool.
