Southampton vs Liverpool Preview, Team News, Likely Line-ups & Predicted Score
Liverpool travel to the South coast on Saturday afternoon to take on Southampton at St Marys. Here’s a preview with team news and likely line-ups for the game.
Liverpool travel to the South coast on Saturday afternoon to take on Southampton at St Marys looking to maintain their late push for a top four finish.
The Reds head into the game off the back of a three straight wins including last Sunday’s comeback against third-placed Tottenham that saw Brendan Rodgers men secure a 3-2 victory with a late Steven Gerrard penalty.
Liverpool’s resurgence has seen then move above Mersey rivals Everton in to six place in the table and within striking distance of the top four, and Rodgers will be keen to continue their form to try and claim an unlikely Champions League spot for next season.
The home side however, are fighting for their lives at the foot of the table and head into the weekends action just four points above the relegation zone after a poor run of just one win in their last eight matches, so will no doubt be doing all they can to secure a positive result on Saturday.
Team News
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has no fresh injuries to contend with. Dan Fox and Steven Davis missed last weekends 0-0 draw with Norwich but are back in contention to face Liverpool.
Defender Vegard Forren played for the U21s again earlier this week so could make a late push for a place in the squad but isn’t expected to start.
Liverpool are expected to be without goalkeeper Pepe Reina once again this weekend. The Spaniard missed last Sunday’s win over Spurs with a calf problem and hasn’t trained all week making him a huge doubt to face the Saints. If Reina misses out, Brad Jones will continue to deputise.
Midfielder Joe Allen is available despite Rodgers confirming the Welshman will require surgery on a long-standing shoulder injury soon. Otherwise, Liverpool have no fresh injury worries and should name a similar side to the team that beat Spurs.
Likely Line-ups
Predicted Score
Southampton have a surprisingly good home record against Liverpool, with the South coast club winning three of their last four home games against the Merseysiders. However, the Reds are in excellent form and should be full of confidence following their win over Tottenham. I can see the visitors edging this one. Southampton 1-2 Liverpool
