United’s Hopes Of Landing Luka Modric Dashed Due To Madrid’s Move For Gareth Bale
Man Utd’s hopes of signing Luka Modric have taken a hit with Real Madrid wanting him to help Gareth Bale settle should they manage to lure him from Tottenham.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Man Utd could now miss out on another target.
Manchester United’s hopes of signing Luka Modric have taken a hit with the Daily Mail claiming that Real Madrid want the Croatian midfielder to help Gareth Bale settle in Spain should they manage to lure him from Tottenham this summer.
The Times reported on Tuesday morning that United had turned their attention to Modric after reluctantly admitting defeat in their pursuit of Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas, and were understood to be lining up a £25m bid for the former Tottenham man.
However, the Mail believe the Premier League champions are set for more frustration in the transfer market with Real Madrid unwilling to sell the 27-year-old as they plan to use the player as a ‘minder’ for top target Gareth Bale should they be successful in signing him from Spurs this summer.
The pair know each other well from the Croatian’s time at White Hart Lane and the newspaper suggests Madrid hope Modric will be able to help Bale settle quickly at the Bernabeu if a deal can finally be agreed with the north Londoners.
Spurs maintain the Welshman is not for sale but Madrid appear determined to get their man and will use everything in their power to make a deal happen. Should they pull it off, the Spaniard’s know moving to a new country can be difficult for some foreigners so they hope that Modric’s presence will help Bale make a successful transition.
This spells bad news for United with David Moyes desperate to add some creativity to his midfield this summer, and Modric was seemingly next on his list of targets after a move for Fabregas was all but ruled out.
There could still be a chance of doing a deal for Modric if Tottenham refuse to sell Bale, but this is likely to mean having to wait until the final days of the window which would be a risky on United’s part as it would leave little time to secure an alternative if they failed to land the Croatian schemer.
