Arsenal Eye Frustrated Manchester City Attacker
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is desperate to sign a new striker in January and has added a frustrated Manchester City hitman to his list of targets. Find out who
Although the summer transfer window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest gossip. Today, Arsenal are linked with Eden Dzeko.
Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Eden Dzeko’s situation with the striker openly admitting his frustration at his lack of playing time at Manchester City, according to the Mirror.
Arsene Wenger has been linked with a number of strikers in recent weeks with the Frenchman believed to be keen on adding to his options up front when the transfer window re-opens in January.
The north Londoners currently lead the Premier League table after an excellent start to the new season but are heavily reliant on Olivier Giroud up front, with the former Montpellier man starting every game so far this campaign.
The Arsenal coaching staff have devised a special training programme for the 27-year-old to try and prevent injury or burn-out but adding someone who can lighten the load up front has become a priority for Wenger.
The Mirror claim the latest striker under consideration is Manchester City’s Dzeko after the Gunners were offered encouragement that he might be open to a move this winter after he spoke out about his unhappiness over his lack of playing time this season.
Dzeko has started just 4 Premier League games so far and admitted last week that he was frustrated at his lack of action and cast doubt over his long-term future at the Etihad, saying:
“I need to play more than I am. I’ve only started four games in the Premier League. The first game of the season I played well, I just didn’t score. The second game I scored, then the manager changed me. I don’t know why.
“Then in the third game he changed me at half-time. Again, I don’t know why. The team played badly in the first-half, for sure, but it’s always on the strikers if it doesn’t go well.
“So I think I could definitely have played more than I have done. For three games in the Premier League I didn’t play at all. That never happened last season. I didn’t go three games without any minutes.
“There’s Champions League and Capital One Cup also, but that’s not enough for me.
“For every striker it’s important to play 90 minutes, not 45, then 50, then maybe 15, you know? But I’m still here and I still have 18 months left on my contract. But you never know what can happen in the future.” Dzeko is quoted as saying by the Mirror.
The Bosnia & Herzegovina hitman has just 18 months left to run on his contract and is unlikely to sign an extension if he continues to be behind Alvaro Negrado and Sergio Aguero in the pecking order, so City may be willing to cash in before his value drops any further.
However, the newspaper suggests Arsenal won’t have a clear run at the striker with Inter Milan also believed to be keeping tabs on the player and may rival for his signature if City decide to sell.
