Gundogan Holds Talks With Man Utd As Moyes Prepares £24m Bid – But Is He The Answer?
Manchester United have already held talks with the representatives of Ilkay Gundogan and are ready to table a £24m bid for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder
With the January transfer window now open for business clubs will be working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Man Utd are linked with Ilkay Gundogan.
Manchester United have already held talks with the representatives of Ilkay Gundogan and are ready to table a £24m bid for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, according to the Mirror.
United have endured a terrible season so far with David Moyes side currently well off the pace in the Premier League, were dumped out of the FA Cup by Swansea City last weekend and will need to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Sunderland to reach the final of the Capital One Cup.
With pressure mounting on Moyes’ shoulders it’s no surprise to read that he’s making attempts to bring in a marquee signing and the Mirror seem to think things are well under way in trying to lure highly-rated German midfielder Gundogan to Old Trafford.
The report states that the 23-year-old’s representatives have already held talks with United chiefs and the defending champions are now ready to test Dortmund’s resolve with a £24m bid.
Midfield is certainly an area I’d expect Moyes to look at strengthening given the lack of options he currently has in this department, but I’m not convinced Gundogan is the answer to his problems.
While there is little doubt he’s an excellent player, United look as though they need a creative head in the center of the park and Gundogan isn’t known for his goals or assists. In fact, he’s managed just 10 goals in over 80 appearances for Dortmund over the last three seasons.
He would also pose something of a risky signing if United did splash around £24m on him when you consider that the player hasn’t featured since August due to a serious back injury. He also has just 18 months left to run on his contract at the Westfalenstadion, so United could pick him up for much less come the summer.
No doubt United fans would be over the moon if this proposed deal came off, but I think Moyes could spend the money more wisely by buying a player who will contribute more in the final third and bring a bit of flair back to the side.
