Arsenal + Liverpool Target Confirms He’ll Be On The Move This Summer
Arsenal and Liverpool have been placed on red alert after French attacker Mathieu Valbuena confirmed he’ll leave Marseille after this summers World Cup finals
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Mathieu Valbuena confirms he’ll leave Marseille this summer.
Arsenal and Liverpool have been placed on red alert after French attacker Mathieu Valbuena confirmed he’ll leave Marseille after this summers World Cup finals, according to talkSPORT.
The diminutive attacking midfielder – who stands at just 5ft 6″ – has been a key player for Marseille over the past seven years since joining the club from Libourne back in the 2006/07 season, and is closing in on his 300th appearances for the club.
Valbuena has been on the radar of Arsenal and Liverpool for some time and it seems they could finally get their hands on the 29-year-old this summer after Marseille coach Jose Anigo admitted earlier this week that the Ligue 1 club are willing to let the tricky attacker leave at the end of the season if they receive a suitable offer.
“If we received a good offer, we won’t force him to stay. He has given a lot to our club so if he wants to he can leave,” Anigo is quoted as saying by talkSPORT.
The player himself has now confirmed that this will be his final season at the Stade Vélodrome, but insists that he’s not interested in discussing his future until after this summer World Cup in Brazil.
“I can only say that this is my final season here, but I do not want to talk about my future. Now I want make the best [season] possible with Marseille and my dream is to play in the World Cup in Brazil. Afterwards we will see.” Valbuena is quoted as saying by talkSPORT.
So it seems this will be the year Valbuena finally leaves Marseille and a move to the Premier League could be on the cards. However, he still has over two years remaining on his contract so he might not come cheap as he’s hugely important to the Marseille first team.
The France international is certainly an ‘Arsenal-type’ player but does Arsene Wenger need another small, nimble-footed attacking midfielder? The Gunners are already well-stocked in this department so perhaps Wenger would be better off spending his money elsewhere.
Liverpool have one of the deadliest attacks in the Premier League right now but depth could be an issue if the likes of Raheem Sterling or Philippe Coutinho pick up injuries, and Valbuena would be an excellent squad player for the Merseysiders if they could manage to get a deal done this summer.
