The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news of Arsenal’s interest in Serge Aurier.
Arsenal have stepped up their hunt for potential replacements for Bacary Sagna with the Mirror reporting that Arsene Wenger is eyeing a move for €7m-rated Toulouse full-back Serge Aurier.
Sagna’s current deal expires in June and he’s yet to agree terms over an extension, leading to speculation he could be set to end his seven-year stay at the Emirates, so understandably Arsene has began looking at possible replacements.
We’ve been linked with a whole host of right-back’s in recent months but the Mirror claim that latest player to have caught the eye is Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier.
The 21-year-old came through the youth ranks at Lens before sealing a move to Toulouse in 2012, where he’s emerged as one of the most talented full-backs in Ligue 1 over the past 18 months.
The newspaper suggests that it would take a fee in the region of €7m (£6m) to persuade the French outfit to cash in, and the player wont take much convincing to join Arsenal if we can agree a fee.
Aurier is a well-known Arsenal fan and he posted a couple of photo’s of himself posing in an Arsenal shirt on his Twitter account when we were linked with him last summer. He also got an Arsenal shirt with his name on it as a present from his team-mates when we were once again linked in January. [The photo’s are below and you can click on them to see them on the players Twitter account].
Aurier is fast and powerfully built, much like Sagna, but he’s far more adventurous going forward and has scored five goals already this season. The fact he’s a Gooner will endear him to Arsenal fans quickly but as he’s also a fine right-back who’s available at a reasonable price, he would make for an excellent option if we do need to bring in a replacement for Sagna this summer.
I still hold out hope that Bacary will sign an extension but the longer talks drag out the more it looks like he’ll be leaving on a free in June, and Aurier might just get his dream move to the Emirates.
