Chelsea Set To Table £20m Offer + Tempt Defender With £55k Contract
Chelsea set to table a £20m bid for Everton’s John Stones and hope to tempt the defender to make the switch to Stamford Bridge with a £55,000-a-week contract
As we approach the business end of the season clubs are starting to make plans for the summer transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea are linked with John Stones.
Chelsea are set to table a £20m bid for Everton’s John Stones and hope to tempt the defender to make the switch to Stamford Bridge with a £55,000-a-week contract, according to the Daily Star.
Stones joined Everton from Barnsley in January 2013 in a deal believed to be worth around £3m and has been a revelation since being given his chance in the first team by Roberto Martinez. The 19-year-old was thrust into the limelight when he replaced the injured Phil Jagielka against Stoke City back in January and has virtually been ever-present since, putting in some impressive displays during his 19 appearances this season.
The centre-back has been tipped by some as a potential wildcard to make it into Roy Hodgson’s England squad for this summers World Cup while he’s also attracted interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League.
The Daily Star claim that Chelsea are now ready to test Everton’s resolve by tabling a £20m bid at the end of the season and will look to tempt the player to quit Goodison Park with a long-term deal worth £55,000-a-week.
Martinez is likely to do all he can to hang on to the highly-rated defender and the newspaper suggests that negotiations are going to be complicated by the fact that Stones is in the middle of changing his agent from current representative Georgina Lillis, so talks are likely to be delayed until he resolves that particular issue.
Chelsea skipper John Terry has formed an excellent partnership with Gary Cahill at the back this season but the 33-year-old can’t go on forever and Stones could be seen as the ideal long-term replacement.
While Everton have given him his big break, it would still be a tempting move for the player if the West Londoners were able to strike a deal and a fee in the region of £20m would be difficult for the hard-up Toffees to resist, so this is certainly one we should keep an eye on over the next few months.
