Wenger Targets ‘Two Or Three’ New Signings But Warns Fans They’ll Have To Wait
Arsene Wenger has revealed he’s looking to make two or three top quality signings this summer but warned fans they may have to wait until after the World Cup.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Gooner Mac brings us quotes from Arsene Wenger about his transfer plans.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he’s looking to make two or three top quality signings this summer but warned fans they may have to wait until after the World Cup to see any activity.
The Frenchman spoke to the media at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning and gave an insight into his summer transfer plans ahead of what he predicts will be a ‘busy’ period.
Given that it looks increasingly likely that Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen, Lukasz Fabianski and Nicklas Bendtner will be leaving the club, some fans feel we need to sign around five or six players in order to make the squad complete next season.
Unfortunately those supporters may be disappointed to hear that Wenger is only planning to make two or three new signings and says his main focus will be stability as he feels we’re not far away from success.
“It will be busy but the main thing for us will be to keep the stability because we feel we are close,” Wenger said
“We want to add something that makes us even stronger but number-wise, it will not be massive. Two or three? Yes.” [source: the Guardian]
The number of players we require is open for debate, but I personally feel we need at least two – a central midfielder and a striker – on top of the players we already have. We then to replace those who leave with top quality replacements.
So if the four aforementioned players all leave then we need six signings. The problem is, three of those players will leave on free transfers so it’s highly unlikely Arsenal will spend serious money on replacements.
Supporters are also keen for the club to try and get it’s business done early in the summer and avoid a late trolley dash, as has been seen in previous windows. However, although Wenger says he’s already got his team looking for potential new recruits, he warned that because of the World Cup, we shouldn’t see any movement in the window until mid-July at the earliest.
The boss told Arsenal.com:
“At the moment I have people around me who start to look [at players],”
“What is available you know always, but we are not on the market specifically at all because teams still play in many countries.
“After that, from my experience, the World Cup years have always been very quiet until the end of the World Cup, with no players reachable. Everybody is focused in the country on their national team and there’s not a lot happening. People are away.
“I believe this year again you will have to wait until July 15 to start going.”
It’s fair to say these quotes aren’t going to go down too well with some supporters who will rightly feel we’re going to have to endure another painful summer of inactivity. However, I feel Arsene is trying to keep expectations low and he will revise his plans once the futures of Sagna and Vermaelen are resolved.
