Arsenal Eye €34m Move For Unsettled Spanish Midfielder
Arsenal could make a stunning €34m move for Javi Martinez with the midfielder growing increasingly unsettled at Bayern Munich, according to reports today.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news of Arsenal’s interest in Javi Martinez.
Arsenal could make a stunning €34m (£28m) move for Javi Martinez with the midfielder growing increasingly unsettled at Bayern Munich, according to reports today.
Martinez moved to Bayern from Athletic Bilbao in 2012 for a fee in the region of €40m and played a key role in Jupp Heynkes side as they went on to win a historic treble in his debut season.
However, he’s found first team football harder to come by under Pep Guardiloa this campaign, with the 25-year-old making just 17 appearances in the Bundesliga and has often been used as a make-shift centre-back when he has played.
The Daily Star cite reports coming out of Germany that claim Martinez isn’t happy with his role in the team and the Spanish international has instructed his agent to tell the Bayern board he wants to leave the club at the end of the season.
The newspaper suggests that Arsenal are interested in bringing the midfielder to the Premier League but with the player still under contract until 2017, it’s believed Bayern would demand around €34m (£28m) for his signature and we could face stiff competition from Manchester City with the Citizens also understood to be keeping a close eye on his situation.
Like many Arsenal fans, I think we need to make bringing in a proper defensive midfielder a top priority this summer and Martinez would be an excellent addition. The powerful Spaniard would bring some much-needed physicality to the midfield and he’d also be able to fill in at the back if needed, so his versatility is likely to appeal to Arsene Wenger.

Whether the boss is going to be prepared to pay around £28m for the player remains to be seen, but I think it would be a worthwhile investment as Martinez would certainly offer an upgrade to Mikel Arteta.
