Chelsea Eye Audacious Move As Unsettled Target Holds Talks Over Future
Chelsea are ready to make an audacious move for Raphael Varane after it emerged the defender is unsettled and is holding talks over his future at Real Madrid
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea are linked with Raphael Varane.
Chelsea are ready to make an audacious move for Raphael Varane after it emerged the defender is unsettled at the Bernabeu and is holding talks over his future at Real Madrid, according to reports.
Varane is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in world football but has struggled to hold down a first team place since moving to Madrid from Lens in 2011.
In fact, the 21-year-old has made just 38 league starts over the past three years and this lack of playing time, coupled with his relatively low salary, has led to speculation that the youngster isn’t content with life in Spain.
The Independent claim today the Varane is holding crisis talks with Madrid chiefs about his future at the club and Chelsea are understood to be ready to pounce should the centre-back make it clear he wants a new challenge.
Jose Mourinho was the manager who signed Varane during his time at Madrid and the Portuguese coach has never hidden his admiration for the player, calling him the best defender in the world back in March.
“I think Varane is the best central defender in the world. He is still young, but I think he’s the best. Already, yes. I think he’s the best defender.” Mourinho said

Judging by his assessment of Varane, it’s safe to say Mourinho would most likely jump at the chance of luring the French international to Stamford Bridge if the opportunity presented itself.
Chelsea are a little short of cover at the back following the exit of David Luiz and with John Terry in his twilight years, a talented youngster like Varane would be a welcome addition to the squad in west London.

However, it remains to be seen whether Madrid are going to be willing to cash-in and it seems Mourinho has a back-up option in place with January signing Kurt Zouma in-line to stay at the club and fight for a first team place having been handed the No.5 shirt.
