Mourinho Ready To Take Spending To £100m As Chelsea Table £20m Bid For Brazilian

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to take his summer spending to £100m after tabling a £20m offer for Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, according to reports.

The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea have tabled a bid for Miranda.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to take his summer spending to £100m after tabling a £20m offer for Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, according to reports.

Mourinho recently declared that his summer spending was finished after splashing out £50m on Atletico pair Diego Costa and Filipe Luiz while another £30m was spent on bringing Cesc Fabregas back to the Premier League from Barcelona.

The former Real Madrid boss said earlier this month:

“I have to say my club did a fantastic job, and not just because of what we bought, but because we did it in almost record time,”

“The transfer market closes 31 August and we close our market on July 19.” Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Express

Despite this claim, it seems the Portuguese coach may still be in the market for further signings and is set to raid Atletico for the third time as the Express are citing reports coming from Spanish newspaper Marca that state the Blues have lodged a formal £20m offer for centre-back Miranda.

The Brazilian defender has been a rock at the back for Atletico since joining the club from Sao Paulo in 2011 and played a key role in helping Diego Simeone’s side win the La Liga title and reach the final of the Champions League last season.

His impressive form has not only attracted interest from Chelsea but reports have also linked Manchester United and Barcelona with the 29-year-old this summer, but it appears the West Londoners have put themselves firmly in the driving seat with this offer while the fact Miranda shares the same agent as Mourinho should also work in their favour.

However, Mourinho is going to have to dig a little deeper if he wants to lure Miranda to England as the Express claim that Atletico will reject their £20m bid and hold out for the full value of the players buy-out clause, which is set at £24m.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will be prepared to go any higher but you’d have to question the wisdom of any club paying over £20m for a player who turns 30 in September. Miranda has been excellent for Atletico in recent years but it would certainly be a strange signing by Mourinho if he chooses to spend big on bringing the player to Stamford Bridge.

He already has the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and Kurt Zouma to cover at centre-back so another central defender is hardly a priority, so unless he’s planning on sending young Zouma out on loan again, perhaps the £20m+ would be better spent elsewhere.
