Man Utd Look To Hijack Arsenal’s Move After Opening Talks Over €30m Midfielder
Manchester United could be set to hijack Arsenal’s attempts to sign William Carvalho after opening talks with Sporting Lisbon over a potential €30m deal.
The summer transfer window is now reaching its climax and managers are working hard to make some last minute additions to their squad, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Manchester United open talks over Arsenal target William Carvalho.
Manchester United could be set to hijack Arsenal’s attempts to sign William Carvalho after opening talks with Sporting Lisbon over a potential €30m deal for the midfielder, according to reports today.
Carvalho has been linked with a whole host of top clubs throughout Europe this summer after enjoying an impressive season with Sporting last term, and he was a rare shinning light for Portugal at this summers World Cup finals in Brazil.
Arsenal have been trying to thrash out a deal for the 22-year-old in recent weeks with reports claiming that Arsene Wenger has already seen two bids rejected after identifying Carvalho as the dominant midfielder he needs to compliment the creative talents in his team.
It’s understood the Gunners are still hopeful of luring the player to the Emirates but it looks like they will now face some serious competition as the Daily Mail are one of several newspaper who are reporting today that Manchester United have also opened talks with Sporting about the midfielder.
Louis van Gaal is believed to be desperate to sign a new midfielder before the window closes on Monday night and with the club struggling to make any headway in a deal for Arturo Vidal, the report states that the former champions have now entered formal negotiations over Carvalho.
The Telegraph claim that United held preliminary talks over the midfielder when they bought Marcos Rojo earlier this month, and they were made aware that Sporting were ready to listen to offers when tying up a deal for Angel Di Maria last week, as the two players share the same agent.
Sporting initially wanted the full value of the midfielders €46m (£37m) buy-out clause, but it’s understood they have since lowered their asking price to €30m (£24m), which makes him a far more appealing proposition for the Premier League duo.
It remains to be seen whether either club will be able to agree a deal, and their attempts are complicated by the fact an investment firm owns 40% of Carvalho’s economic rights, but he would be a fantastic addition if either Arsenal or United were able to pull it off.

United may have the advantage that they have an excellent relationship with Sporting having done plenty of business in the past, but the Gunners will be confident of being able to persuade Carvalho to opt for north London as they are able to offer Champions League football.
It’s going to be an interesting final few days of the window and Carvalho is just one big-money deal that’s in the pipeline, so fans are in for a nail-biting few days to see what players, if any, they are able to get over the line before the window slams shut on Monday night.
