The summer transfer window may be closed but managers are already thinking ahead to future transfer windows so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal are linked with Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.
Mats Hummels wants to join Arsenal in January despite Manchester United holding a long-term interest in the Borussia Dortmund defender, according to reports today.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has already admitted he needs to strengthen at the back as his failure to bring in an adequate replacement for Thomas Vermaelen has left the Gunners short of options, with Nacho Monreal forced to play as a make-shift central defender in recent weeks due to an injury to Laurent Koscielny.
Speculation has linked the North Londoners with a whole host of defenders with Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar and Celtic’s Virgil Van Dijk regularly linked in the gossip columns, but the Mirror claim that Wenger is now ready to make a move for Hummels when the January transfer window reopens.
The German international’s future at the Westfalenstadion has been cast into doubt as talks over a contract extension continue to stall and understandably he’s attracting interest from a number of top European clubs with Manchester United joining Arsenal in showing a keen interest in bringing him to the Premier League.
Louis van Gaal has seen his defence decimated by injury and suspension this season with Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all spending time on the treatment table while Marcos Rojo is now facing weeks out with a dislocated shoulder, so the Dutchman is in desperate need of reinforcements this winter.
Hummels has been touted as a top target for United since the summer so it will come as a major blow to van Gaal to learn that according to sources in Germany, the 25-year-old would prefer to join Arsenal this winter if he does end up leaving Dortmund.
The Mirror suggest that although the former Bundesliga champions are desperate to keep hold of the defender, a bid in the region of €38m (£30m) could persuade them to cash-in with Jurgen Klopps side fearing Hummels is now ready to seek a new challenge.
Dortmund have endured a miserable domestic season so far and slumped to the foot of the Bundesliga table on Saturday – although they could climb out of the bottom three if they pick up just their third victory of the season at home to Borusia Monchengladbach this afternoon.

With key players such as Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski both leaving in recent years and Marocs Reus tipped to join them, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hummels also head for the exit door and it seems that Arsenal are now leading United in the race for his signature.
