Liverpool could be set to miss out on one of their primary targets as Manchester United are ‘closing in’ on a £20m deal for Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne, according to reports.
United boss Louis van Gaal is believed to have identified the right wing-back role as a priority position that he needs to strengthen this month as Rafael has been plagued by injury so far this campaign while Antonio Valencia’s form has been inconsistent at best.
Several names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford but the Daily Star claim that van Gaal has now made Nathaniel Clyne his top target after giving up hope of trying to land Everton’s Seamus Coleman.
The newspaper suggests that United have scouted Clyne extensively throughout the season and are now ‘closing in’ on a £20million deal for the 23-year-old full-back.
The news will come as a blow to Liverpool are the Merseysiders have also been strongly linked with a move for Clyne, with Brendan Rodgers on the look-out for a long-term replacement for Glen Johnson.
However, if the Daily Star‘s report is accurate then the England international could be set to follow former Saints team-mate Luke Shaw in heading to Old Trafford in a big-money move.
I’d personally be hugely surprised if Southampton agreed to sell Clyne this month as they’re currently sitting in third position in the Premier League table and on course to qualifying for Europe next season. Therefore, if United are to secure a deal, I’d expect it would be for the summer when Ronald Koeman would have more time to reinvest the money.

If United do end up signing Clyne then I think it would be an excellent addition as he’s become a top class right-back over the past 18 months and at 23, he’s got plenty of time to develop further under the stewardship of van Gaal. But we’ll have to see if anything comes of this or if it’s just idle newspaper gossip.
