Liverpool and Chelsea are eyeing late moves for €40m-rated hitman Mauro Icardi after contract extension talks with Inter Milan broke down, according to reports.
Icardi joined Inter from Sampdoria in 2013 and has been enjoying an excellent campaign with 14 goals in his 24 appearances in all competitions so far.
The Serie A giants are keen to reward him for his fine form with a new contract and it’s believed the club opened negotiations with the 21-year-old’s representatives earlier this month.
However, the Express reported last week that those talks have already broken down as Icardi is demanding a huge pay-rise and with finances tight at the San Siro, Roberto Mancini is understood to be ready to cash-in on the striker this month if a club meets their €40m (£30m) valuation.
It seems the strikers situation has alerted Chelsea and Liverpool as the Daily Star are now reporting that the duo are lining-up late moves for the Argentinean international before the transfer window closes on February 2.
Brendan Rodgers is understood to be on the look-out for attacking reinforcements as doubts continue over the future of Mario Balotelli, with the Reds boss publicly criticising the players effort in training recently, and Icardi would be an exciting addition to the Merseysiders strike-force if they were able to lure him to Anfield.
But the Reds could face stiff competition from Chelsea as the Star suggests that boss Jose Mourinho has identified the 21-year-old as a potential replacement for Andre Schurrle, who is angling for a move away from Stamford Bridge this month.
Icardi would certainly be an exciting signing as he’s one of the most promising young strikers in Europe and at 21, he’s got his whole career ahead of him and will no doubt only improve over the coming years.
