Manchester United are set to table a €50m bid for Mats Hummels as Louis van Gaal brings forward his plans to try and land the Borussia Dortmund defender.
With the January transfer window coming to a close, managers are frantically trying to tie-up those late deals and strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are set to move for Mats Hummels….
Manchester United are set to table a €50m bid for Mats Hummels as Louis van Gaal brings forward his plans to try and land the Borussia Dortmund defender, according to reports.
Hummel’s future at the Westfalenstadion has been thrown into doubt in recent months following Dortmund’s terrible start to the season that sees them sit joint bottom of the Bundesliga table at the mid-way point of the campaign.
Understandably, he’s attracting interest and the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the German international in recent weeks, with both Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal on the look-out for defensive reinforcements this month.
Reports suggest van Gaal has made Hummels his top transfer target as he looks to shore up his leaky defence and the Gunners have now cleared the way for United after snapping up Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal.
It seems United are now ready to make their move as the Express are citing reports coming from German outlet Bild which claim the Red Devils are set to table a formal €50m bid before the transfer window closes on Monday night.
The newspaper suggests that the 20-time Premier League champions were willing to wait until the summer to try and land Hummels but have decided to bring forward their plans as they want to take advantage of the weak Euro, with current exchange rates meaning €50m equates to just over £37m.
It remains to be seen how Dortmund will respond to such an offer. No doubt that sort of money would be extremely difficult to turn down but with the former Bundesliga champions in a real relegation battle, Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to keep hold of his skipper.
Even if United could persuade Dortmund to cash in, there’s no guarantee the player would accept the move. Hummels has been reluctant to commit his long-term future to Dortmund but he’s always insisted he’d see-out the current campaign, so it might be difficult for United to lure the centre-back away mid-season.

Therefore, I personally don’t see any move happening in the winter window and United will almost certainly have to wait until the summer if they want to get their hands on the German international.
