Brendan Rodgers has given a full team news update ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Goodison Park to face Everton on Saturday evening.
The Reds boss told Liverpoolfc.com that Daniel Sturridge will be assessed after training on Friday before any decision is made over whether he’ll start the game.
Having been on the sidelines for over five month, Sturridge made his comeback with a goal against West Ham at Anfield last week after coming on as a second half substitute.
The 25-year-old followed that up by coming off the bench once again during Wednesday’s Capital One Cup comeback victory over Bolton Wanderers.
Some fans have been calling for the striker to start against Everton this weekend but Rodgers insists no decision will be made until closer to kick off on Saturday.
While Sturridge’s return is a welcome boost, Liverpool do have doubts hanging over four other first team squad players this weekend.
Lazar Markovic suffered a back injury against Bolton in midweek so he’ll be assessed on Friday along with Mario Balotelli, Dejan Lovren and Lucas Leiva, who all missed the Cup clash against Bolton.
Rodgers told the clubs website:
“Every player wants to play, not just Daniel. You go into each game and every player that gets paid here at the football club wants to play.
“Daniel is coming along very well. It’s not that he won’t start, [but] we need to analyse that over the next couple of days. We shall see.”
“We’ll see tomorrow [on Markovic]. Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli were out for last night, Lucas Leiva was out as well.
“We’ll see. There’s nobody definitely ruled out, but we’ll see how they are tomorrow.”
I personally think we’ll see Sturridge start from the bench again this weekend as Rodgers won’t want to take any unnecessary risks with him.
The Northern Irishman will be hoping that Leiva is passed fit to return to the side as Joe Allen was disappointing against Bolton and the Brazilian’s presence was certainly missed in the middle of the park.
