Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has risked upsetting Roman Abromovich by admitting he’s putting the Premier League title ahead of the Champions League next season.
Blues owner Roman Abramovich is desperate for the prestigious European trophy but boss AVB appears unfazed by the owners high expectations. As he prepared for his first competitive match in charge away to Stoke, which the Blues drew 0-0, Villas-Boas said:
“I won’t be satisfied if we don’t win the Premier League.
“We look for excellence and look to win back the title that escaped us last season. We’ll do everything in our power to win it back. The domestic title is always the priority.
“It’s unfair for me to criticise Carlo in any sense of the word for what happened last season.
“This club wasn’t successful in obtaining the Premier League title and its owner decided to part company with the manager – a manager who’d been very successful in his first year at Chelsea, which we can only dream to emulate.
“Hopefully we can be up to what Carlo did in his first year and more. The squad went through a couple of big injuries and had problems with results in the middle of the season, there’s no running from that. Chelsea managed to shorten the big gap that reached 15 points at one stage in the run-in to the game at Manchester United.
“My consideration of last season is that Chelsea really had a big possibility of winning back to back titles when they went to Old Trafford to play there. Had they shortened the distance it could have been a different story and the man speaking today might not have been me. That’s what happened.
“The owner decided he had to part company with his manager and now we focus again on the standards of this club over the last seven years, winning the most titles as possible. That’s where we come in, trying to achieve it.”
