As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are confident of landing Dani Alves….

Manchester United are confident of beating Liverpool to the signing of Barcelona full-back Dani Alves this summer, according to reports.

Alves has been on the books at Barca since joining the club from Sevilla in 2008 and has become arguably the best right-back in world football over the past seven years.

The Brazilian international has been a mainstay in the Catalans back four and his impressive displays have helped the club secure a whole host of top honours including 4 La Liga titles while he could lift his third Champions League this weekend.

However, the 32-year-old is expected to end his stay at the Nou Camp when his contract expires at the end of this month and he recently admitted he’s not been impressed by how Barca have conducted contract extension negotiations.

Speaking at the end of last month, Alves told reporters:

‘I’ve had to put up with a lot this year and this is the reason why I’m speaking out, I feel a lack of respect and I have limit.

‘I haven’t taken a decision yet. I have a few options that I’m considering but I will take a decision after the Champions League final.’

‘I know the club didn’t want to renew my contract until they found out FIFA’s ruling, but I have a value and I’ve worked for it.

‘The club wants me to continue because my performances have improved in the past four months. But as of today the situation remains the same as that of last June.

‘I have spoken to the club president and I have given him the figures on what I feel is fair for me to continue.’

‘It’s not a case of money, I’m just defending what is mine, I’ve always said that I would like to remain at Barca but not at any price.

‘I want to be valued for what I’ve done in this position, which nobody else has done. I feel 200 per cent in the team but just 10 per cent in the club,’

The uncertainty has led to interest from the Premier League with Manchester United and Liverpool strongly linked with a move for the Brazilian star in recent months, while PSG are also understood to be keeping an eye on his situation.

However, it appears Alves could be heading to Old Trafford as the Guardian claim that United believe they are in pole position to sign the full-back this summer and are confident of winning the race for his signature.

Louis van Gaal needs to bring in a new right-back this summer as Rafael has struggled to keep himself fit over the past year and Antonio Valencia was forced to fill-in for the majority of last season.

The Ecuadorian international applied himself well but van Gaal needs an established right-back if he’s to make United title challengers again and there aren’t many with a CV as impressive as Alves, so he’d be an excellent addition if they could pull it off.

United did have an interest in Nathaniel Clyne but it appears van Gaal has turned his attention to Alves, which could actually work out well for Liverpool as it leaves them in the clear to snap up the Southampton defender.
