Liverpool entertain rivals Manchester United at Anfield this evening with both sides desperate to win the first north-west derby of the new Premier League season.

This fixture remains one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the season with hostilities between England’s two most successful clubs as fierce as ever and this game has added spice as it will see Jurgen Klopp lock horns with Jose Mourinho for the first time.

Liverpool head in to the game in excellent form having won their last four league games and they can move level on points with joint leaders Manchester City and Arsenal with a win tonight.

United on the other hand were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Stoke City last time out and sit seventh in the table but they can move level on points with the Merseysiders if they leave Anfield with victory this evening.

Team news

Liverpool will hand a late fitness test to midfielder Adam Lallana as he remains a major doubt due to a groin injury that kept him out of England’s recent World Cup qualifiers.

Georginio Wijnaldum is also likely to miss out after suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty with Holland last week so Emre Can is set for a recall to the starting eleven.

However, Nathaniel Clyne is expected to start at right-back after recovering from a minor knee injury while Dejan Lovren has also been passed fit after a groin problem.

Man Utd head to Anfield with virtually a fully-fit squad to choose from after Luke Shaw recovered from a groin strain that’s kept him out for the last four matches.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also available for selection after overcoming a niggling thigh problem which has kept him out since the Manchester derby over a month ago.

Defender Phil Jones is the only absentee as he continues to nurse a knee injury while Wayne Rooney could once again find himself on the bench after being left out for both club and country recently.

Likely Line-Ups

Predicted Score

Liverpool 2-1 Man Utd: United have a strong recent record against Liverpool, winning the last four league meetings between the two teams including a 1-0 win at Anfield back in January. However, the Merseysiders have been impressive this season while United have underwhelmed so far, so I think Klopp’s side are just going to have the edge with the passionate Kop crowd roaring them on to a narrow 2-1 win.
