Arsenal Squad Assessment: Who Stays, Who Goes & Who Gets Promoted

By on May 31, 2011

Now that another disappointing campaign is over, the silly season is upon us. But before we move on to who we should buy and which areas of the team need to be strengthened, I personally feel our beloved team is in serious need of some good old fashioned housekeeping.

Below I have compiled a list of players currently at the club and split them in to four categories: players fit for the starting 11; squad players who are on the fringe of things or have fallen out of the starting 11 thanks to indifferent performances; youth players who should be promoted to the first team squad; and players that I feel are a spent force and should be shipped off to Europe or the lower leagues.

Starting 11

  • 3. Sagna
  • 4. Fabregas
  • 5. Vermaelen
  • 8. Nasri
  • 10. Van Persie
  • 19. Wilshere

Squad Players

  • 2. Diaby
  • 6. Koscielny
  • 16. Ramsey
  • 17. Song
  • 20. Djourou
  • 21. Fabianski
  • 22. Clichy
  • 23. Arshavin
  • 27. Eboue
  • 28. Gibbs
  • 29. Chamakh
  • 53. Sczesny

Youth Players

  • D. Bartley
  • D. Miquel
  • D. Botelho
  • M. Coquelin
  • M. Eastmond
  • M. Frimpong
  • M. Henderson
  • M. Lansbury
  • M. Miyaichi
  • M. Wellington
  • M. Gallindo
  • M. Watt
  • F. Afobe
  • F. E-Thomas

Transfer

  • 1. Almunia
  • 7. Rosicky
  • 11. Vela
  • 15. Denilson
  • 18. Squillaci
  • 24. Mannone
  • 30. Traore
  • 52. Bendtner

I know many of you will not agree with my assessment, so here is your chance to alter things. However there are a few caveats which must be observed, these are noted below.

1. Players from the starting 11 can be moved to the squad player list.

2. Squad players can be moved either to the starting 11 or to the transfer column.

3. The youth players (made up of players that have been out on loan or have had some first team action this season) can be moved to the squad players list or to the transfer list.

4. The transfer list is immovable, as none of these players (in my view) add value to the squad or have already asked for a move.

Have fun fellow Gooners.

song as a squad member?.tell me you kidding

    • kharadonha

      May 31, 2011 at 11:03 am

what is it you like about Song? our back 4 isn’t comfortable bcoz Song is not doing his job. secondly, look at the fouls he commited and goals came thru set pieces and still rate Song as one of the best in the world. you kidding me. Our players must have style first to play and to protect the ball. Descipline from our senior players to new and promoted players to the first team. I see that at Arsenal no one is respected amongst the players and everyone does what they want to do with the ball which clearly states that we are far from being the best in the world though we play fantastic football but bcoz of these attributes that we don’t have it makes it difficult for a team to produce good result week in week out.

I’ll pray that Arsene select 4 players to lead the team and make sure that descipline is something we should have moving forward. we should be a family and friends and last but not least, our players dressing code should be on the agenda if we want this team to be respected. I’m talking about players who come to Emirates with their flashy clothes as if this is a fashion show (Eboue & Song)

Spot on the dressing code mate. They should know that they carry the image of the club than anything else. They are not rappers. I have nothing against rappers but the club comes first

Kharadohna no body can say it precisely about song like the way you have put it.I agree your categorisation of song as a squad player.
If one understand football he only need to see what Diarra was doing against Barca,in champion league, the original Makelele and Patrick Viera.Even if we sign vidic to partner Vermaleen without proven DM our defence will be weak.Song has not reached the worldclass defensive Midfield level he is a squad player.

You sound like you were inspired by Adolf Hitler! What does how Song & Eboue dress have to do with how we play on the field??? I’ve seen Messi & Ronaldinho dress in similar fashion to Song & Eboue, and their fans didn’t give them hell like what you are doing. Focus on the real issues my friend. Also, if you don’t rate Song then you obviously don’t understand football. If he were so dumb, then why does last season Champions League winner Inter Milan want him??

Vela flatters to deceive. Most of the time he doesn’t even flatter. I don’t understand this fixation some fans have with him.

use Gibbs and maybe Bartley, Frimpong (Diaby?) others on loan to entice transfers for maybe Baines, maybe Samba, maybe Lopez (anybody who has some freakin’ experience!)

Sell Mannone? Are you serious? and Squillaci has put some decent performance in that last half, its his first season and he is decent for a 4th choice CB.

If we are looking to selloffplayers etc.
      then Clichy,SAgna,Arshavin,Walcott shou
ld be the ones to go but what do petty Arsenal fans actually know about the

Kos6? as a squad player? He can give a really run for TV5. Where is TW14? or he has Barca DNA in him

  10. Rudolf

    May 31, 2011 at 11:11 am

Where’s Walcott? He’s very important for Arsenal and I think he should be starting almost every game if his body let’s him. Vela should have more shots at the first team because in my opinion he fits the Arsenal style of play. I think we should offload Chamakh because he’s slow and useless. Other than that I think your list is spot on. There’s a lot of work to do so GET BUSY MR. WENGER!

  11. Bergkamp10

    May 31, 2011 at 11:29 am

You left out walcott, hes definately a starter. Koscielny is aswell once he breaks his stride, and Song is decent the squad plays like S*** without him.

  12. Gunne2301

    May 31, 2011 at 11:38 am

That is exactly the same list I would have if we were to make the changes needed. I hear people calling Walcott and whilst he is missing he should be in the squad list and only used off the bench, stats back up this theory. Vela our new Chicarito? LOL Not without a strike partner and that’s not our game so reluctantly I would sell him, it’s kind of an Eduardo situation all over.

Song deserves to be in the squad and not a starter he gives the ball away cheaply leaves the defence practically naked and gets forward too much forgetting his primary role is to defend and win the ball. His tackling isn’t clean and he gives away free kicks in dangerous areas. This is not new he has been doing this for over a season. He also isn’t good enough against top opposition and we need someone better in there if we are to make ourselves champions again.

If you brought in the 5 players needed to make a first 11 obviously some of the squad players would have to be on the transferred out list and we would have problems with some players not happy getting less playing time i.e. Arshavin, Clichy, Song who would probably want to look for clubs where they can start.

Add the following to supplement the 6 already in the first team and we will have a team worthy of being champions.
    Loris of Stecklenberg
    Samba
    Enrique or Baines
    Di Rossi or Alou Diarra
    Falcao

In reality none of this will happen and we will end up with a half way house because Wenger isn’t bold enough.

    Song a squad player?
you’re joking right, he’s one of the best holding midfield players there is.
we need to bring in quality defenders like chiellini or samba a good forward like falcao or gamiero and good players to back up the midfield such as witsel, krasic, diego ribas. these players can make a difference

    • samuel

      May 31, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Exactly right with Alex Song and another
      powerful skilful midfielder/defender Ars
enal will be perfect but not Wilshere or
Ramsey who are lightweight and not the
most skilful of players so who to partner Song as Arshavin should be sold back to his Russian club Zenit as soon as possible at a handsome profit?

i guess we have to keep those who need to be keep and release those who have to go like Ebue cause he being a little bit waste because for years he have still not qualify for first team.

While Alex song is a decent player, he isn’t brilliant at either defending or attacking. Felipe melo should be brought in….

He is such a brilliant player, clear ti see when he was out of brazil world cup games, they missed him a lot. Another Brazilian to watch is neymar, with the acquisition of fernando Torres, neymar has no place in the squad…especially with a brilliant Danny sturridge coming back too.

I also think ryo miyaichi is also going to be brilliant. Walcott was inspirational for parts of the season and I think that over the next season he is going to fill the boots of number 14…

Sahko is also another player who we should look into. But I have a feeling djourou will be very good next season. If you look at the games he has played, bthe only time he has made mistakes was when koscielny made a mistake…

Hazard is man on the Market to sign. However it would an effect on Walcott playing so I think it’s a choice between neymar and hazard up front. With hazard we get then havebtwo wingers with incredible pace who can almost score at will. But with neymar you have flair and creativity which I think fits right into arsenals team.

Finally a left back, clichy is not going to stay, invest in someone like Leighton baines. Or even better might be michel bastos, he would be the ideal man at left back….

    My ideal team would be:
    Sczesny
    Sagna
    Vermaelen
    Djourou
    Michel bastos
    Felipe melo
    Wilshere
    Fabregas (ISAA)
    Nasri (ISAA)
    Van persie
    Neymar

ISAA – if still at arsenal

Replacements for nasri and fabregas are:

    Hazard and Walcott

    • Khalil

      May 31, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Formation for this team would be 4-1-2-1-2

Fabregas is one of the best in the world at the moment, he has to stay and wenger needs to spend some of the 200 million he made in the last 15 years….

add clichy and diaby in transfer list

  25. bc

    May 31, 2011 at 6:15 pm

I would add Diaby, Eastmond, Eboue and Fabianski to the transfer list but keep Mannone. Sunu, Hoyte and Murphy would follow Randall, Cruise and Deacon out of the door. I would not guarantee any player a place at Arsenal they are all squad players. However with all those transfers we would need to buy and many of those players listed as youth need further loans. * = start season on loan

    GK: Stekelnberg, Szcesney, Mannone*, Lehmann
RB: Van der Weil, Sagna, Jenkinson
    LB: Vermaelen, Clichy, Botelho
    CH: Samba, Djourou, Bartley*
    CH: Vertonghen, Koscielny, Miquel*
    DM: Parker, Song, Frimpong*, Coquelin
    RM: Wilshire, Lansbury, Henderson*, Silva*
    AM: Fabregas, Ramsey, JET, Galindo*
    LM: Nasri, Arshavin, Gibbs, Miyaich*
    CF: RVP, Walcott, Chamakh, Watt*
    CF: Berbatov, Gameiro, Afobe*

BTW that is 7 new signings, and 17 sold reducing the squad to a much more manageable number. I have been realistic with the signings obviously i would like to see Hazard, Benzema, Falcao, Young, Scneider, Schweinsteiger but for us to get those sort of players we will need to sell Fabregas, Nasri and Van Persie, so lets hope that dont happen.

Agree with most of it. You have chosen to ignore though the players who will leave us rather than the other way around. Cannot see more than one of Cesc, Clichy & Nasri still being here at the start of next year.

Song is exactly the type and level of player we need on the bench, rather than the passengers we have had this season. But the DM position is crucial and he isn’t good enough for 40 games and anyway – Wilshere & Ramsey could occupy 2 of the 3 midfield slots.

Sagna’s crossing is woeful but we’d be left with only 3 or 4 starters.

Far, far too many youth team players – you have 9 but add Bartly & JET who played in midfield at their loan clubs. What the hell do we need 11 midfielders on top of Ramsey, Wilshere and overload of first teamers.

Eastmond and Watt for two have not a hope of breaking through amongst that lot. Lansbury, Bartley & Myachi are the pick of the 3, rather see them given a long run rather than 2 or 3 games for 10 different players.

we are not the only ones not bying i mean look at man u who have they bought only chicharito i think arsenal should buy given, samba, baines, hazzard, falcao, diarra or mascherano or mikel, berbatove because we need a goal scores with rvp we should sell almunia and vito mannone , bendtner, clichy, maybe chamakh, eboue, vela, denilson, daiby
