Liverpool Star – Tottenham Tried To Sign Me

By on September 19, 2011

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing admits he was close to a move to Tottenham.

The former Aston Villa wide man has been excellent since his switch to Liverpool in the summer, but concedes he was close to a move to north London on two separate occasions. He said:

“Tottenham made a couple of moves for me when I was at Boro. There were offers in the summer of 2008. Spurs came in again that following January. Then I got injured.

“Because I was injured I think Spurs were reluctant to come back in.

“The big thing for me was that Martin O’Neill was pushing hard for me to join Villa. If a player is injured then it takes a lot of trust to sign him.”

Downing’s early form hasn’t gone unnoticed after he was selected for England in their two European Qualifiers earlier this month.
