With the January transfer window now open for business we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer gossip. Today,

Molde defender Vegard Forren is set to snub Liverpool’s offer of a trial in favour of a move to Southampton, according to the Daily Star.

The BBC reported on Monday night that the Norwegian international was due on Mersyeside today to under go a week’s trial ahead of a proposed move to Anfield.

However, in a dramatic twist, it seems the 24-year-old could now be on his way to Premier League strugglers Southampton with the Star one of several news outlets who claim the South coast club have hijacked Liverpool’s move for the defender.

The newspaper claims that the Saints have put forward an offer for Forren and the player is now expected to turn his back on Liverpool’s offer of a trial and travel to Southampton for talks with Nigel Adkins.

Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Southampton’s offer and hinted that a move is now close:

“There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer, it was very interesting for us and Vegard,”

“We are more or less agreed with the club, but nothing is a hundred percent confirmed.”

Solskjaer is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

Former Southampton defender Claus Lundekvam looks like he has played an important part in proceedings, after confirming he recommended the player to his former employers.

“I got a call from Southampton about a month before Christmas and I highly recommended him [Forren],”

“Southampton have been looking for a top-class defender for a long time, and Forren is a type that fits in with the way they play.” Lundekvam is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
