Spanish giants Barcelona have tabled a £30m offer for Chelsea defender David Luiz but the Blues are determined to hang on to the fan-favourite this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims the Catalans are keen to strengthen their defensive options this summer and are on the look-out for a long-term replacement for captain Carles Puyol, who at 35 is coming to the end of his illustrious career.

A number of players have been linked with a move to the Nou Camp in recent weeks including Chelsea’s afro-haired Brazilian, and it appears Tito Vilanova has decided to make his move for the 26-year-old with the Mail claiming the La Liga outfit have submitted a formal £30m offer.

The report suggests Chelsea will reject that offer out-of-hand but Barca are expected to come back in with an improved bid and an apparent ‘source’ told the newspaper that it’s now just 50:50 whether Luiz will still be at Stamford Bridge next season.

Despite the odd question mark over his defensive capabilities, the Brazilian international has been a huge hit at the Bridge since joining from Benfica in January 2011 and he’s become a real fan-favourite among the Chelsea faithful, so it would be a huge blow to the club if he did end up leaving for Spain this summer.

But the lure of Barcelona is going to be difficult to resist if they continue to push for his signature and you wouldn’t be surprised if he’s had his head turned already.

Vilanova was forced to play midfielders Javier Mascherano and Alex Song at centre-back when Puyol was injured last season so it’s no wonder they’re after another defender, but unfortunately for Chelsea it seems they’ve made Luiz one of their top targets and it could be a real battle to hang on to him over the coming weeks.
