Willian To Undergo Medical After Spurs Reach Agreement For Liverpool Target

By on August 20, 2013

With the summer transfer window in full swing, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Spurs are closing in on Willian.

Shakhtar Donetsk Willian

Willian: In his Shakhtar days

Tottenham appear to have beaten Liverpool to the signing of Willian with reports coming out of Russia claiming the midfielder is now due to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms after the north Londoners agreed a fee with Anzhi Makhachkala.

Willian is one of several big names who’ve been made available for transfer this summer by the Russian club after the owner pulled the plug on his lavish spending in favour of a more frugal approach.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with the Brazilian international with Brendan Rodgers understood to be keen on bringing him to Anfield, but reports in recent days have suggested Spurs have also entered the chase and were willing to trump the Reds offer – believed to be £26m.

It seems as though the Londoners have been successful with a report by Russian media outlet Sports.ru claiming that Spurs have reached an agreement with Anzhi for the 25-year-old and he’ll now travel to the capital to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms. It stated on the website:

“Tottenham have reached an agreement in principal with Anzhi for Willian. The probability of the transaction is very high.

The player will now undergo a medical and contract negotiations”

Russian football news claimed on their Twitter page that the fee is 35m Euro’s plus a percentage of any sell-on fee.

If these reports are accurate it will be another bitter blow to Liverpool after the club missed out on the signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Diego Costa earlier in the summer.  From Tottenham’s point-of-view though it will represent a major coup and Andre Villas-Boas will have added a real player to his ranks, although his acquisition would surely raise further question marks over the future of Gareth Bale.

However, nothing is official yet so until we hear something from the clubs in question it’s best to take these reports with a pinch of salt.

*UPDATE* The Daily Mail and several other British newspapers are also reporting that Willian has arrived in London to complete his move to Tottenham.

What a waste of money, for that amount you want a world class player, something this guy clearly isn’t, Spurs what are you thinking.

I think you’ll find that we were watching this guy before he signed for Anzhi. I’m a Spurs fan but must admit to loving the way Brendan’s got Liverpool playing. I do think they’ll improve on their position this season but with Man U, Chelsea, Man City, all looking good, a 3 way fight for that 4th spot is defo on the cards!

if this story is true, then i may ask that ‘is liverpool really’ serious of finishing in the top four?. Because this current squad is not good enough to even finish above their city rivals everton. If lfc do not sign(Turan, Dimao, or Willian), then, am afraid they’ll be even be relegated.

You haven’t got a clue about football. Yes we need to add quality to the team but relegated… seriously get a grip!

LFC were never going to get top 4 with or without willian. They are still short a number of players!

Liverpool scouting team? Levy went to the Ukraine last summer to buy Willian but couldn’t do a deal so I’m not sure how you Liverpool fans think we are copying you this time around.

Spurs have been linked with this guy for the last 3 transfer windows. If they are using Liverpool’s scouting network, then Liverpool are very slow in getting the job done!

Also, didn’t Dempsey do quite a good job at Spurs before they got all their money back upon selling him?

Ffs, 35m and a substantial sell on clause, are these English football clubs thick. This fellow won’t take either club any closer to the top 3 teams, it looks like a desperation signing for whoever eventually gets him, crazy fools trapped trying to outdo each other but still not getting anywhere close to the big clubs.

Willian is a player Spurs have followed for a few years now, it won’t be a flash sale In that sense. The fee seems quite high but don’t forget spurs got £30m for modric so to swap one play maker for another FOR similar amounts is not too bad. He’s a better player than modric too so win win. At 25 he’s coming to his peak so its a good move. Its interesting that the player choose Spurs maybe the pools allure is fading?

I simply dnt understand why liverpoolfc always struggle to sign a world class player wiles Tottenham makes it very simple to sign them….

May be am so fanatical about this. We mustn’t waste money to sign quality players. We need the right quality at the right time. Brendan will do a better job soon!

Cool. You have William then. We’ll sign that Brazilian chap Willian instead and see how he goes…….if you know so little about who you’re trying to sign I really don’t think you should be commenting on a football website. Even with this signing Liverpool would still be a few players short compared to spurs with regards to top four though. Give Rodgers time and Liverpool will be back up there. He’s definately got them looking a lot better now.

This is a clear indication, that once again our (liverpool) board is not serious about getting marquee player as they say. This woud have been ideal oportunity of proving there seriousness.
I wish they would stop BS us and come out straight and say we “Not” getting a key player. All these broken promises!

Well as a Spurs fan I have some light at the end of the tunnel for Liverpool fans, we have all but sold Bale now where as you have kept Suarez, at the very least you should end up with the seasons best player (after his ban is over) and probable top scorer. I also expect both our teams to finish above the Arse as things stand. Hope you guys finish below us though (perhaps in 4th ahead of Chelsea?! – oh that Would be nice!
