Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is eyeing up an ambitious move to try and bring AC Milan midfielder Nigel De Jong to Anfield this month, according to the Mirror.

The Merseysiders have enjoyed a promising first half of the season and it seems Rodgers is keen to strengthen his squad this month to aid their push for a top-four finish, and he could be on the look-out for midfield reinforcements due to concerns over the fitness of Lucas Leiva.

The Brazilian was forced off against Aston Villa on Saturday with an apparent knee injury and was reported to have left Anfield on crutches. Leiva suffered a serious cruciate knee ligament injury in 2012 so the club are understandably being cautious with his fitness this time around.

The Mirror claim that Rodgers has now identified De Jong as a potential replacement for Leiva, and may make an ambitious move to try and lure the midfield enforcer back to England this month.

The 29-year-old only moved to the San Siro from Manchester City 18 months ago but saw his first season in Italy hampered by a serious knee injury that restricted him to just 16 appearances in all competitions. However, the Dutchman has now regained full fitness and has established himself as a vital part of the Milan midfield this season, racking up 26 appearances already.

AC Milan are enduring a torrid season in Serie A, currently sitting 30 points off the league leaders in 11th place, and last week they sacked manager Massimiliano Allegri and replaced him with former player Clarence Seedorf. De Jong started in his first game in charge – a 1-0 win over Verona on Sunday – but it remains to be seen whether he’ll be in his new bosses long-term plans or if they may consider cashing-in should Liverpool come calling.
