Manchester United are hoping to land long-term Liverpool target Arda Turan by offering Shinji Kagawa plus £16m in exchange for the Atletico Madrid attacker, according to reports.

Turan has been a key player for Atletico over the past three seasons since joining the club in 2011, and his 9 goals and 6 assists helped Diego Simeone’s men land the La Liga title last season.

He’s long been linked with a move to the Premier League and speculation once again reared it’s head last month with reports claiming that Liverpool and Man Utd were set to battle it out for the 27-year-old’s signature.

However, it looks like United are set to steal a march on their rivals with the Express suggesting that Louis van Gaal is ready to use Shinji Kagawa as bait to try and tempt Atletico in to letting the Turan go this summer.

Kagawa has been out-of-favour at Old Trafford since making the move from Borussia Dortmund two years ago and Atletico have reportedly made enquiries over his availability this summer, so a cash plus player swap deal could appeal to the Spaniard’s.

The newspaper states that United value Kagawa at around £14m and are prepared to also stump up £16m in cash making the whole deal worth £30m – which is just shy of the winger’s £32m buy-out clause.

While Atletico are keen on the Japanese attacker, it remains to be seen whether they will be prepared to let Turan go, but the fact they would have a replacement and money left over to strengthen others areas means United’s offer is likely to be a tempting one.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool respond to United’s offer for Turan with a bid of their own. Brendan Rodgers has made a number of signings this summer with his spending set to break the £100m mark, but he’s still believed to have funds available and the Turkish international would be an excellent addition to the Anfield attack.

However, as it stands it appears United look like they are in the driving seat for his signature with van Gaal hoping Kagawa will be the trump card that will see them lure the winger to Old Trafford this summer.

Do try and keep up with recent events guys. The Glsziers have only last Friday made it abundantly clear to LVG that he has to achieve CL qualification with the existng squad or MU will go bust. To put it in simple terms that all the feature writers with a brain cell might understand MU will not be bidding for any players in the current transfer window due to lack of funds
