Man Utd Target French & German Stars As Part Of £100m Summer Splurge
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is targetting the likes of Paul Pogba and Mats Hummels as part of a £100m spending spree this summer, according to reports
The January transfer window is now closed but that won’t stop the newspapers from speculating ahead of the summer so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are looking to spend big again this summer…
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is targetting the likes of Paul Pogba and Mats Hummels as part of a £100m spending spree this summer, according to reports.
United spent almost £150m last summer on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Radamel Falcao and Ander Herrera and although some of those deals haven’t worked out as planned, it doesn’t look like stopping the club spending heavily again this summer.
The Daily Mail claim that Louis van Gaal will have at least £100m to spend in order to turn United into genuine title challengers again next season and the Dutchman has drawn-up a list of high profile targets that he feels will be able to make an immediate impact.
The newspaper suggests that top of his priority list is bringing in a top class central defender and a dominant midfielder with Borussia Dortmund’s Hummels and Juventus star Paul Pogba his prime targets.
Hummels has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and with Dortmund enduring a poor season that’s destined to see them miss out on Champions League football next year, the 26-year-old could be looking for a fresh challenge and the German World Cup winner would be the type of player van Gaal could build his defence around.
Pogba has developed into one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world since joining Juve on a free transfer from United in 2012 so the Red Devils will need to pay big money if they want to lure him back to the Premier League.
While Pogba and Hummels alone could set United back close to £100m, the Daily Mail claim that van Gaal will also look to bring in a right-back with Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne and Barcelona’s Dani Alves on his radar.
Clyne is much younger and would cost a sizeable transfer fee, but Alves has the experience and is available on a free transfer as his contract is due to expire in June, so it will be interesting to see which one van Gaal goes for.
The final player the report suggests as a key target is Holland international Memphis Depay. The 21-year-old winger has been in sensational form for PSV this season as he’s scored an incredible 23 goals and provided 6 assists in 34 games so far, so he’d give United a real goal threat from out wide if he was to join the club.
If United could sign Hummels, Clyne, Pogba and Depay, and keep hold of David De Gea this summer, then I think they’d be right up there for the Premier League title next season.
