Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi with Louis van Gaal ready to trigger his €50m release clause this summer.
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd close in on Nicolas Otamendi….
Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi with Louis van Gaal ready to trigger his €50m release clause this summer, according to reports.
The United boss is expected to bring in another top class centre-back at the end of the season after failing to land any of his top targets during the past two transfer windows.
Otamendi has been a name strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months with reports back in January suggesting they had held initial talks with the players agent about a potential move.
Further speculation in March claimed that United had sent club officials over to Spain to watch the 27-year-old in action during a 4-0 win over Elche and to hold formal talks with Valencia over a possible deal.
It seems the Red Devils are now ready to make their interest official as the Express are citing reports coming out of Spain that claim United are prepared to meet Otamendi’s €50m (£36m) release clause in order to secure his transfer to Old Trafford.
Valencia are keen to keep hold of the powerful defender and they are under no pressure to sell their best players after being taken over by billionaire businessman Peter Lim.
However, there would be very little they could do to prevent Otamendi leaving if United do match the release clause and the player decides he wants to make the move, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this develops.

The Argentinean international has been in excellent form for Valencia since making the move from Porto in January 2014 but despite being at the club for little over a year, the Express suggest a move to United is now close.
With Chris Smalling signing a new long-term deal earlier this week, should Otamendi arrive this summer then the future’s of Phil Jones and Jonny Evans would come under serious threat and you’d expect one of the pair to leave the club to make room for the new arrival.
