Man Utd Team News: LvG Confirms Major Double Injury Boost But Trio Ruled Out
Louis van Gaal has confirmed a major injury boost ahead of Manchester United’s clash with West Brom but three key players have been ruled out of the game.
Manchester United will look to break in to the top three when they entertain West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
Ahead of the game, Louis van Gaal has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and has given ManUtd.com a team news and injury update.
The Reds boss confirmed some positive news with Wayne Rooney fit and available for selection despite being forced off against Everton last weekend with a knee injury.
There were reports during the week that the striker may have tweaked ligaments and be out for the season, but van Gaal has revealed that the injury wasn’t as bad as first feared so Rooney is available to face the Baggies this weekend.
The Dutch boss also confirmed that Phil Jones is fit and could be back in contention after recovering from a foot injury that’s kept him out of recent games, while Robin van Persie is pushing for a recall after scoring twice for the under-21’s in midweek.
However, Luke Shaw is once again sidelined after picking up a groin injury and there was further bad news with Jonny Evans ruled out through injury just a week after returning from a six-match suspension.
van Gaal said told the clubs website:
“Rooney is fit to play, it was not so heavy as we expected,”
“Wayne is very important for us, so I am very happy. Jones is fit but we have to see his match rhythm, of course. But Shaw has trouble with his groin so he cannot play.”
“It is unbelievable [the Evans injury]. For six weeks he had nothing and he could not play or participate in the selection [due to suspension] and then he had an injury. It is unbelievable, but it is true.”
“He [van Persie] played 80 minutes, and I think that’s good. When you score two goals also, it gives a boost for the confidence of Robin. He can play but we have to wait and see if I let him play, of course.”
With Rooney passed fit he is expected to lead the line once again this weekend while Jones could replace Antonio Valencia at right-back after United’s disappointing showing against Everton last week.

There were hopes that Michael Carrick could return from a calf injury that’s plagued him in recent weeks, but van Gaal confirmed that the midfielder is still not fit enough to return.
