Manchester United could be handed a major injury boost ahead of their pivotal FA Cup replay against West Ham with Wayne Rooney in contention for the trip to Upton Park, according to the BBC.
United head to the capital on Wednesday evening looking to book their place in the semi finals of the FA Cup after being held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford last month.
Louis van Gaal knows this game is crucial as he looks to salvage something from another disappointing campaign with United now facing an uphill struggle to qualify for the Champions League following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Tottenham.
The Red Devils were handed a major boost after Rooney made his comeback with a run-out for the under-21’s last night following two months on the sidelines with a knee injury.
The United skipper hasn’t played since limping out of the 2-1 defeat at Sunderland on February 13 but played 60 minutes for the youth team during a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Monday night.
van Gaal was in the stands to watch his captain in action as the 30-year-old looked to build on his match fitness but after missing the last 12 games in all competitions, Rooney was understandably a little rusty.
The England international had a pretty quiet game with only a few glimpses of his quality on show as Paddy McNair scored the only goal of the game minutes after Rooney had been substituted.
However, despite his lack of match sharpness, the BBC claim that Rooney could still be included in the squad that travels to Upton Park tomorrow night which would be a real boost for the Manchester giants.
Without Rooney, van Gaal has had to rely on youngster Marcus Rashford through the middle and while the 18-year-old has performed superbly at times, United could certainly do with another option in attack against the Hammers.
If Rooney is named in the squad, it’s highly unlikely he’ll start, but the skipper would be a very useful player to have available from the bench as van Gaal was forced to deploy Ashley Young as a make-shift forward against Spurs at the weekend.
