Transfer News: Man Utd Eyeing Double Swoop For Two Arsenal Targets
Man Utd are eyeing moves for Arsenal targets William Carvalho and Joao Mario this summer after sending scouts to watch them in action for Sporting Lisbon
Manchester United are eyeing moves for Arsenal targets William Carvalho and Joao Mario this summer after sending scouts to watch them in action for Sporting Lisbon at the weekend, according to the Daily Star.
Louis van Gaal’s position as manager is under threat but with United back in the mix for a top four spot and favourites to win the FA Cup this season, the Dutchman could yet be given the chance to see-out the final year of his contract.
It looks like van Gaal is already planning for next season as the Daily Star claim that he sent scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon’s 1-0 win over Moreirense on Saturday evening with the United representatives believed to be keeping an eye on both Carvalho and Mario.
Whoever is in charge at Old Trafford come the summer will surely embark upon a squad overhaul after another disappointing campaign and midfield is likely to be an area of concern given that Michael Carrick is out of contract in June and 31-year-old Bastian Schweinsteiger has endured an injury-plagued season.
Carvalho has been enjoying another excellent campaign at Lisbon with the defensive midfielder impressing in his 31 appearances so far and he’d add some real power and physicality to the United midfield if he was to make the move to Old Trafford.
The Portuguese international’s midfield partner, Mario, is the more creative of the two with the 23-year-old chipping in with six goals and 10 assists in his 41 games, and while his main position is central midfield, he’s also capable of playing on the wings.
The Daily Star claim that both players have been linked with moves to Arsenal this summer as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his midfield department ahead of the impending departures of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini.

However, United’s interest means Arsenal will now face stiff competition for their signatures and Sporting could look to create a bidding war between the two Premier League clubs this summer, if they decide it’s time to cash in on two of their most prized assets.
