Arsenal have been rocked by a huge injury blow after confirming that Danny Welbeck has been ruled out for nine months after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.
Welbeck was forced off midway through the first half of our 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday after colliding with Bacary Sagna in the 24th minute and Arsene Wenger revealed after the game they feared he’d damaged the cartilage in his right knee.
The 25-year-old was sent to see knee specialist Andy Williams earlier this week to determine the best course of action but unfortunately the doctor determined that surgery was needed after scans showed significant damage to the cartilage.
A statement on Arsenal.com confirmed the news this afternoon and Welbeck’s recovery is expected to take around nine months, meaning he’ll miss a huge portion of next season as well as this summer’s European Championships.
The statement said:
Danny Welbeck has had surgery to his right knee.
Specialists determined surgery was required after scans and tests revealed significant cartilage damage.
The 25-year-old was injured during Sunday’s match at Manchester City. Danny will miss the Euro 2016 Championship in the summer and his full recovery is expected to take approximately nine months.
The news is a huge blow to Arsenal as Welbeck has only just returned from 10 months on the sidelines with another knee injury which he suffered back in April 2015. He’s made a big impact since returning to action, scoring five goals including vital winners against Leicester and Norwich.
However, while it’s bad news for the club, it’s absolutely gut-wrenching for Welbeck and you’ve really got to feel for the lad. Hopefully he can make a swift recovery and play an important part during the second half of next season.
