Tottenham Hotspur are looking to trump Liverpool to the signing of Jonas Hector after opening talks with Koln over a deal to sign the German international defender this summer, according to German outlet Express.
Hector began his career in the youth ranks at SV Auersmacher but moved to Koln in 2010 and has developed in to one of the best full-backs in German football since becoming a first team regular in 2013.
His impressive form at left-back has seen the 26-year-old become a vital part of Joachim Low’s German team with Hector playing every minute at Euro 2016 so far to help his country reach the semi-finals where they’ll now face hosts France.
The defender has also attracted interest from the Premier League with German outlet Express claiming that Tottenham Hotspur have now joined Liverpool in the race to sign Hector this summer.
Jurgen Klopp has already been busy in the transfer market bringing in four players so far but the Liverpool boss is seemingly on the look-out for another left-back to compete with Alberto Moreno as the Spaniard has been widely criticised for some of his defensive performances, not least in last seasons Europa League final.
Hector looks to be on Klopp’s radar and he obviously knows the player well from his time in Germany, however, the Express claim that Spurs are looking to trump their rivals after opening formal talks over a potential deal for the defender.
Mauricio Pochettino is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of their assault on the Champions League but his interest in Hector is curious as he already has two solid left-backs on the books in Danny Rose and Ben Davies.
However, the German outlet says Spurs want to get a deal agreed over the coming weeks with Koln now valuing Hector at around £17m following his superb performances at Euro 2016 – although any move for the player will have to wait until his participation at the tournament is over.
