Arsenal are trying to hijack Liverpool’s attempts to sign Neven Subotic after tabling a £12m bid for the Borussia Dortmund defender, according to German publication Express.
Subotic has been with Dortmund since joining the club in 2008 and after initially being an important part of the first team, he’s seen his playing chances limited in recent years due to poor form and injury problems.
The Serbian international was restricted to making just 11 appearances in all competitions last season and the Daily Mail claim that after not turning up for pre-season training, the defender has been granted permission to talk to interested clubs.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for the 27-year-old with Express reporting that Jurgen Klopp is keen on being reunited with the centre-back at Anfield having previously worked together at Dortmund.
However, it looks as though the Merseysiders have some work to do if they want to sign Subotic as the German outlet claims that Arsenal have now made contact with Dortmund and submitted a formal £12m (€14m) offer and are now in pole position to secure a deal.
Arsene Wenger needs to bring in another centre-back to partner Laurent Koscielny as Per Mertesacker and Gabriel have failed to make the position their own and it appears the Gunners boss has identified Subotic as a potential new recruit.
The defender would bring plenty of experience if Arsenal could get a deal agreed but until that happens there is still time for the likes of Liverpool to step-up their interest and make a rival offer for his services.

Both Wenger and Klopp may have concerns over his injury problems but there could be another potential stumbling block over a work permit as Subotic hasn’t played for his country since 2013, so any deal to bring him to England is still a long way off.
