Key Man To Leave? Wenger Casts Doubt Over Future Of £140k-A-Week Arsenal Superstar
Arsene Wenger has cast doubt over the future of Mesut Ozil after admitting the attacker wants to win major trophies and suggested he’s demanding a huge pay rise
Arsene Wenger has cast doubt over the long-term future of Mesut Ozil after admitting the playmaker wants to win major trophies and suggested he’s demanding a huge pay rise, according to the Mirror.
Ozil’s contract has less than two years left to run and talks have begun over an extension that would see him get a significant increase on his current £140,000-a-week deal.
However, the Mirror claim that Ozil knows his worth in today’s climate and is demanding in excess of £200,000-a-week, and Wenger has hinted for the first time that the club may struggle to agree terms with the German international.
Even if we can come to a financial agreement, it seems Ozil may still need need further convincing if he’s to commit his future to north London as Wenger says the 28-year-old is keen to win major trophies over the coming years.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 and the boss concedes that with the club battling the likes of Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea for the title every year, it’s difficult to guarantee success to top players.
Wenger is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“I don’t think he [Ozil] needs convincing. He wants to stay here. But if you have a good bank, call me.
“It’s not just money. Arsenal can win titles of course. But that’s what we have to show. We are in a League where Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea everybody fights and you cannot guarantee that to anybody.
“We keep that (negotiations) discreet. At due time we will come out with that. We want to keep our best players, of course. But the more I say that, the more he is in a stronger position!”
The Mirror claim that Arsenal have previously been confident about getting a deal agreed with Ozil but the clubs position is now more ‘hopeful’ as we’re struggling to reach an agreement with the playmaker.
It would be a major blow if we can’t tie Mesut down to a new deal soon and it would leave the club facing the very real possibility of having to cash-in at the end of this season as he would have just one year left on his contract.
There is no way we can allow a valuable asset like Ozil enter the final year of his deal and risk losing him for nothing, so unless a compromise is reached over the coming months, this could be the German’s final season with Arsenal.

That doesn’t bare thinking about as Ozil is our best player and has made a huge impact since joining from Real Madrid in 2013 so let’s all pray that we break the bank to keep him at the Emirates.
