Man Utd vs Man City Preview, Team News, Line-Ups, Betting Tips & Predicted Score
Man Utd take on Man City in the League Cup tonight. Here’s a preview with team news, likely line-ups, betting tips and predicted score for the game
Manchester United will be looking to put Sunday’s defeat at Chelsea behind them when they entertain Manchester City at Old Trafford in the last-16 of the EFL Cup this evening.
It was a nightmare return to Stamford Bridge for Jose Mourinho as his side were thrashed 4-0 by Chelsea on Sunday afternoon to leave them sitting seventh in the Premier League table and six points adrift of the leaders.
Ordinarily the League Cup wouldn’t exactly be high on Mourinho’s priority list but given Sunday’s result and the fact this is a Manchester derby, there is certainly an added pressure heading in to this game tonight.
The good news for United is that City aren’t in great form themselves and extended their winless run to five games in all competitions with a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Southampton at the weekend.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side remain top of the table and came out 2-1 victors on their visit to Old Trafford last month so they’ll be confident of piling more misery on their rivals tonight.
Team news
United will be without Eric Bailly after he was ruled out for up to two months with a knee ligament injury sustained on Sunday so Daley Blind is expected to play alongside Chris Smalling at centre-back.
That would clear the way for Luke Shaw to return at left-back while Matteo Darmian may come in at right-back with Michael Carrick expected to marshall the midfield as Marouane Fellaini is a doubt with a knee problem.
Wayne Rooney will also be assessed after missing the Chelsea game with a thigh problem while Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Ashley Young could come in to the attack as Mourinho shuffles his pack after a busy period.
City will be without Kevin De Bruyne as he’s been ruled out with a calf injury which he picked up against Southampton while Pablo Zabaleta is also expected to miss out with a foot problem.
Bacary Sagna remains unavailable due to a hamstring injury but Vincent Kompany could keep his place at the back after coming through the Southampton game unscathed.
Guardiola has confirmed that Willy Caballero will start between the sticks with Claudio Bravo rested.
Likely Line-Ups
Predicted Score
Man Utd 1-1 [1-2 ET] Man City: This is an intruiging game as neither side is in top form and both managers have something to prove. I think it’ll be a tense affair during the opening stages and wouldn’t be surprised if it ended all square after 90 minutes, but feel City might just edge it in extra time.
