Manchester United are ready to launch a mega £47.6m bid for a Serie A star as Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his options this month.
Managers are now making moves to try and strengthen their squads during the January transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with Kostas Manolas….
Manchester United are set to launch a £47.6 million bid for Roma star Kostas Manolas as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in defensive reinforcements this month, according to a report in the Metro.
Mourinho has seen his options at the back diminish with Eric Bailly off to play at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast while Marcos Rojo picked up a muscle injury at the weekend leaving United with just two fit central defenders.
The Red Devils have been strongly tipped to wrap-up a big-money deal for Victor Lindelof but with the proposed £38m deal with Benfica stalling [source: Metro] it seems Mourinho has turned his attention to other targets.
And it looks like the Portuguese coach is ready to make his move as the Metro are citing reports coming from the Sun that claim United are now lining-up a huge £47.6m offer for Kostas Manolas.
The Greek international has developed in to one of the best centre-backs in Italian football since joining Roma from Olympicos in 2014 and he’s featured in all but three of the clubs fixtures so far this season to help Luciano Spalletti’s side to second place in the Serie A table.
Manolas is a no-nonsense defender who is superb in the air and equally good in the tackle so I think he’d be an excellent signing if United did manage to get a deal agreed this month.
However, the Metro claim that Roma are determined to keep hold of the centre-back and will hold out for a fee closer to £52m should United come calling over the coming weeks.

The Manchester giants have the financial muscle to meet that kind of valuation but it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford hierarchy would be willing to splash out in excess of £50m on a defender after several transfer windows of excessive spending.
